Early Baroque Musketeer Garb John from Moleskin and Linen

Historical Context and Ideal Use

During the early modern period and particularly in the first half of the 17th century (during the Early Baroque period and the Thirty Years' War), military and civilian fashion underwent a dramatic transformation. This complete set perfectly reflects the fashion inspired by the French and Imperial regiments from 1620–1640. The long, sleeveless jerkin (or wams) with extended tails protected soldiers in the camp while providing sufficient freedom of movement for fencing with a rapier or handling a heavy matchlock musket. The costume is absolutely ideal for Thirty Years' War re-enactment, historical fencing (as representative civilian attire outside the combat arena), theatre plays, and for demanding LARP characters such as noblemen, mercenaries, or royal guards.

Detailed Craftsmanship and Materials

The entire product is crafted from carefully selected materials that meet historical standards and ensure a long lifespan. The striking dark blue jerkin is sewn from fustian (100% cotton), a densely woven, durable fabric with a subtle nap that visually evokes luxurious velvet but can withstand much rougher handling. The front fastens with robust leather straps, measuring approximately 2 cm (0.8 inches) in width, and metal buckles, giving the garment a martial flair. Beneath the jerkin, a generously cut shirt made from a comfortable blend of linen and cotton is worn. Its wide sleeves end in lace-up cuffs, and the dominating feature is the broad collar, which is decorated with fine lace around its perimeter. The ensemble is completed by wide-waisted breeches, gathered at the bottom in true accordance with the aesthetics of the time.

How to Properly Care for Your Historical Clothing

To ensure this musketeer costume remains in perfect condition and the colours retain their saturation for as long as possible, we recommend washing the shirt and breeches inside out on a gentle cycle at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F). Due to the metal and leather elements, the jerkin is best dry-cleaned only, or carefully spot-cleaned by hand using a damp sponge on soiled areas. Avoid using aggressive bleaches and never dry the garments in a tumble dryer. Ironing the linen shirt is best done on a medium setting while the fabric is still slightly damp.

Safety Warnings and Recommended Accessories

Although the costume appears very sturdy, it is civilian/representative clothing, not protective armour. The fabric will not protect you from cuts or thrusts during full-contact HEMA fencing or heavy combat battles. Protect the clothing from direct contact with open flames (e.g., at a campfire), as natural materials without modern fire retardants can catch fire easily. Please note that the elegant hat with ostrich feathers, the footwear, and the weapons shown in the photographs are not included.

To create the perfect illusion of a fearless warrior, we recommend purchasing a wide-brimmed musketeer hat, high leather boots, a broad leather belt with a scabbard, and, of course, an elegant swept-hilt rapier to accompany this set.
