Gothic Mi-Parti Garb of a Welsh Longbowman with Liripipe Hood, 14th Century

Historical Context and Usage

This outfit is based on garments typical for the mid-14th century, specifically corresponding to the year 1346, the time of the famous Battle of Crécy. It was there that Welsh and English longbowmen decimated the French heavy cavalry. The archer's clothing consists of a long tunic sewn using the mi-parti principle (vertical division into two contrasting colours), a highly popular style across all social classes in Western Europe at the time. The garment is complemented by a cowl featuring a hood drawn out into a typical long tail, known as a liripipe. The cowl served as excellent protection against the cold, wind, and rain, which was vital for archers guarding walls or camping in the field.

When and Where to Wear the Costume

This set is an ideal choice for 14th-century historical reenactment, living history, fantasy LARP, or cosplay. The tunic is simply pulled over the head; we strongly advise wearing a linen undertunic beneath it to absorb sweat. The cowl is slipped over the shoulders and head. For a proper historical silhouette, the tunic must be gathered at the waist. We recommend you complete this garb with a long leather belt featuring a brass buckle and linen or woollen hose fitting the 14th-century fashion. Please note that the belt, footwear, and any other accessories shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery.

Material, Care, and Safety

The costume is made of high-quality duvetyne (100% cotton). This material is strong, durable, yet very pleasant to the touch. It possesses excellent absorption properties and regulates body temperature well. Regarding safety, keep in mind that cotton is highly flammable; never approach an open flame while wearing the costume, as there is a severe risk of ignition and serious burns. Never wash the costume at high temperatures or use bleach, which would cause irreversible damage to the rich colours and shrink the fabric.

To keep your garment looking new for as long as possible, wash it at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) on a delicate cycle or by hand. Do not tumble dry, and iron it inside out on a medium heat setting. Detailed instructions for cleaning and maintenance will help you with long-term care.
