Historical Context and Usage of the Garment

This uniform embodies classic French military attire from the mid-18th century, specifically around the year 1750, just before the outbreak of the Seven Years' War (known in North America as the French and Indian War). The white and blue colour combination and the anchor motif on the turned-back skirts of the coat clearly point to the Compagnies Franches de la Marine – independent companies of naval infantry that formed the backbone of the French military forces in the colonies, particularly in Canada. The coat, featuring long narrow sleeves and prominent cuffs, is buttoned and worn over the undershirt. The dark blue breeches reaching below the knee are complemented by practical canvas spatterdashes (gaiters), which historically protected soldiers from mud and underbrush during long marches.

Care and Maintenance of Materials

Given that the coat and breeches are made of 100% wool, extra care must be taken during maintenance. Never wash these woollen parts in a washing machine and do not tumble dry them, as this could cause irreversible shrinkage and damage to the tailoring. Leave the cleaning of the woollen layers exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. The undershirt and canvas gaiters, which are made of 100% cotton (raw linen cloth), can be washed gently by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at low temperatures.

Recommended Accessories for the Uniform

To achieve the perfect look of an 18th-century soldier, we recommend acquiring a traditional black tricorne hat, sturdy leather shoes, and a set of leather belts for weapons and equipment. Please note that the tricorne hat, leather crossbelts, waist belt, cartridge box, canteen, and weapons (musket, bayonet) shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. The costume consists exclusively of the coat, breeches, shirt, and calf gaiters.

In this case, please fill out our measurement chart carefully after completing your order. Upon your request, the uniform can also be sewn in other colours according to our fabric swatch books. Simply note your desired colour in the comment field of your order (include the swatch book number, the letter of the colour, and its name, e.g. 03-A-yellow). If you choose a fabric with a different composition, the price may change slightly, which we will, of course, consult with you in advance.
