Men's Wool Military Uniform Scot in French Service 1750

Historical Context and Usage of the Garment

This uniform dates back to 1750, on the eve of the Seven Years' War. During the 18th century, the French Royal Army frequently utilised the services of foreign regiments. These included Scottish Jacobites who were forced to flee their homeland after unsuccessful uprisings against the British Crown. These regiments retained a certain pride and specific elements, but their uniforms conformed to the French military cut. The long dark blue coat (justaucorps) reaching below the knees is characterised by extended skirts, prominent cuffs, and decorative fastenings. It was worn over a red waistcoat with similarly extended skirts. The collar area is complemented by a traditional linen or cotton shirt with a decorated jabot. The soldier's authentic look is completed by breeches reaching below the knee and typical canvas spatterdashes (gaiters), which protected the footwear and legs from mud on marches.

Care and Maintenance of Materials

To ensure your uniform remains in perfect condition for as long as possible, it is necessary to follow the correct cleaning procedures. Since the outer layers (coat, waistcoat, and breeches) are made of 100% wool, it is essential to leave their cleaning exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. Never wash wool in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it, otherwise there is a risk of irreversible shrinkage and damage to the material. The cotton shirt made of raw linen cloth can be washed gently by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at low temperatures. Ironing should be done with maximum caution at the appropriate setting.

Recommended Accessories for the Uniform

To achieve the absolutely perfect look of an 18th-century soldier, we recommend acquiring a traditional black tricorn hat, period leather low shoes, and a wide leather belt with a brass buckle to accompany the uniform. We would like to point out that the belt, hat, footwear, and the depicted weapons (musket and sword) are not included in the delivery of this costume. These accessories should stylistically correspond to the mid-18th century.
