Crusader Longsword Hugues de Payens for HEMA and Stage Combat, Spring Steel

Construction and Practical Use

This sword belongs to our upgraded SWM series, where the primary focus is delivering an outstanding ratio of price to functionality. The blade is honestly forged from our trusted spring steel and subsequently heat-treated in proven local workshops. This process guarantees optimal hardness and material flexibility for your safe sparring sessions. On the smooth surface of the blade, you will notice a prominent fuller (blood groove), which significantly reduces the weapon's weight without sacrificing its structural integrity. The weapon is supplied with an elegant black scabbard. This scabbard is covered in durable faux leather adorned with a rich floral embossed pattern, complete with metal fittings and a practical suspension system for easy belt carrying. The grip is firmly wrapped to ensure a secure hold and is divided in its center by a metal ring, which assists in tactile hand navigation during complex fencing techniques. The crossguard is straight, finishing in aesthetically twisted finials, perfectly complementing the overall Crusader look.

Historical Legacy and Typology

Based on its shape, blade length, and two-handed grip design, we can classify this replica as belonging to the High to Late Middle Ages. Typologically, the blade is very close to the Oakeshott Type XIIa or XIIIa classification. These types of swords were primarily intended for delivering devastating cuts against mail armor, while still allowing for effective thrusting attacks. The coin-shaped pommel with its striking red cross refers directly to the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (the Knights Templar), whose first Grand Master was Hugues de Payens. Similar swords were wielded by knights marching on their campaigns to the Holy Land.

Sword Care and Safety Guidelines

To ensure this beautiful piece lasts you a long time, it requires regular maintenance. The steel of the blade has a natural tendency to succumb to rust if exposed to moisture or the sweat from your hands. After every training session, it is absolutely essential to wipe the blade dry and treat it with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil or sword wax. The faux leather scabbard only needs to be occasionally wiped with a damp cloth. Always protect it from extreme temperatures or direct heat, which could permanently damage the synthetic material.

From a safety perspective, please remember that even though this is a blunt-edged weapon intended for HEMA and stage combat, it is not a toy. The flex of this blade is rated at 15 kg. Standard longswords for HEMA typically have a flex range of around 12-13 kg, which means this sword is slightly stiffer. In a bind, it will behave with great authority, but it requires caution during powerful thrusts to avoid injuring your sparring partner. Always use the prescribed protective gear – a fencing mask, a padded gambeson, and reinforced fencing gloves. No sword is indestructible, so strictly avoid cutting into hard, unyielding objects such as trees, stones, or metal pipes, which would fatally damage the replica.

Recommended Accessories

To accompany this Crusader sword, we highly recommend purchasing a sturdy gambeson, a certified fencing mask, and heavy-duty leather or synthetic HEMA gloves for your maximum safety. For hassle-free maintenance, a universal weapon cleaning and conservation kit will also serve you incredibly well.
