Renaissance Sparring Sabre Hunyadi with Complex Hilt

Historical Context and Usage

The historical originals of this sabre, often referred to as complex-hilted messers (dussack, pappenheimer dussack, or early sabres), began appearing on the battlefields and in the towns of Eastern and Central Europe during the 16th century. They were highly popular amongst infantrymen and town militias due to their practicality in close-quarters combat. The Hunyadi sabre is designed to simulate the handling dynamics of these historical weapons. Its gently curved blade, complete with a long fuller, ensures excellent edge alignment and point control. You can safely use it to train techniques from surviving fencing manuals (fechtbücher) by masters such as Joachim Meyer or Paulus Hector Mair.

Detailed Description and Materials

The blade of this sabre is carefully forged from high-quality 65Mn spring steel. It undergoes a professional heat treatment process in our facility, achieving an ideal hardness of approximately 49-53 HRC. This hardness ensures the blade withstands the impacts of heavy training whilst retaining the necessary flex. The hilt is securely fastened with a robust peened pommel, which is historically the most reliable method of joining the blade to the hilt, guaranteeing maximum safety. The guard and fittings are crafted from durable stainless steel, which offers excellent resistance to corrosion. The grip and the elegant scabbard, complete with an integrated suspension system, are wrapped in quality synthetic leather, giving the weapon a stylish look that is also very easy to maintain.

Safety and Practical Use (HEMA)

This replica falls into the category of practice weapons and is fully functional for full-contact HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) sparring and drills. The flex range of this sabre is safely calibrated to approximately 6-8 kgs (13.2-17.6 lbs), which ensures that thrusts performed during sparring are safe. The blade is blunt and specifically adapted for training contact. Nevertheless, always remember that fencing is a contact sport. Whenever you spar, you must use appropriate protective equipment – a certified fencing mask, a padded jacket (gambeson), and heavy-duty HEMA gloves. Never fence with individuals who are not wearing protective gear to prevent unnecessary injuries.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure your sword serves you faithfully for a long time, it requires regular maintenance. 65Mn steel has fantastic mechanical properties but is not rust-proof. After every training session, wipe the blade down with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture, and then apply a thin layer of gun oil (such as Ballistol or WD-40). Do not leave the weapon stored in its scabbard in a damp environment for prolonged periods, as this could lead to surface corrosion. The synthetic leather on the grip and scabbard simply needs an occasional wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use the sabre to chop hard materials like wood, plastic, or stone; sparring swords are not designed for such abuse.

Recommended Accessories

For this sabre, we highly recommend purchasing robust HEMA gloves designed for one-handed weapons, providing adequate finger mobility within the complex hilt. For complete safety during training, a high-quality fencing mask with an overlay and a sturdy padded fencing jacket will also be essential.
