Decorative Samurai Sword Set Daisho with Blue Scabbard and Dragon
The Symbolism of the Dragon and the History of the Daisho
During feudal Japan, swords represented the very soul of the samurai. The exclusive privilege to wear the pair of swords known as the daisho (translating to "big and small") belonged solely to this warrior class. While the long katana was used for combat in open spaces, the shorter wakizashi was essential for fighting inside buildings and confined areas. This set is further enriched by the short tanto dagger, historically used for personal defence or the ritual suicide of seppuku. The golden Asian dragon (ryu) depicted on the scabbards is not merely a hollow decoration; in Japanese mythology, it represents a profound symbol of wisdom, the water element, and divine protection.
Detailed Craftsmanship and Koshirae
The swords are visually harmonised into a highly attractive design. The wooden handles (tsuka) are tightly bound with a traditional black cotton cord (tsuka-ito), providing an authentic appearance and a comfortable grip. The circular guard (tsuba) is finished in a patinated bronze tone and decorated with a fine relief that matches the pommel (kashira) and the collar (fuchi). The wooden scabbards (saya) are protected by a brilliant, deep blue lacquer that makes the golden dragon motif stand out beautifully. A traditional tying cord (sageo) is also attached to each scabbard.
Safety Guidelines and Maintenance
The blades of these weapons are made from basic mild steel. For your own safety, we must strongly warn you: these are exclusively decorative items and are not intended for any practical use whatsoever. The swords are unhardened and are not suitable for tameshigiri (cutting tests), martial arts training, iaido, or any contact fencing. Attempting to cut or strike with them would cause the blade to bend or break, potentially leading to fatal injuries to yourself or those around you.
Even though this is a purely decorative piece, we recommend caring for the set. Wipe the dust off the lacquered scabbards and the stand using only a dry and very soft microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the glossy surface. The blades themselves do not require the rigorous maintenance of historical steel, but for a flawless look, you may occasionally treat them with a thin layer of gun oil.
