Gothic Star-Shaped "Bamberg" Brooch with Gemstones, 13th Cent.

A Jewel Inspired by Gothic Sculpture

The original of this brooch dates from the High Gothic period. You can find it on one of the most famous sculptures of German Gothic art – the figure of Synagogue, which, along with the statue of Ecclesia (the Church), is part of the portal of Bamberg Cathedral. These two figures represent the allegorical depiction of the Old and New Testaments. The figure of Synagogue is depicted blindfolded, symbolising that she has not yet "seen" the true light of faith. It is this very ornate brooch that holds her cloak. By wearing this replica, you are also wearing a legacy of one of the greatest works of medieval sculpture.

Design and Craftsmanship

The brooch is in the shape of a six-pointed star with a lozenge-shaped central opening. Each of the six points is finished with a stylised trefoil, which is set with three faceted stones (gemstones), giving it a luxurious look. The entire brooch, including the movable pin, is carefully cast from high-quality, solid brass with a patinated finish that lends it an authentic golden lustre. The precise craftsmanship makes each piece an original.

Based on the photographs, you can choose from several colour variations:

  • Green
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Multi-colour (a combination of green, red, and blue) has been discontinued

How to Properly Use a Brooch (Fibula)

Using this ring brooch is easy and much gentler on the fabric than a modern safety pin. It is perfect for fastening the neckline of a woman's dress (kirtle), a man's tunic, or for securing a cloak or mantle. It is ideal for medium-weight wool and linen fabrics.

  1. Pierce the fabric with the pin where you want to fasten the garment.
  2. Bring the tip of the pin back up through the fabric and pass it through the central opening (the lozenge) of the brooch.
  3. Rotate the brooch 90 degrees so that the pin rests against the frame. The tension of the fabric will hold the pin securely in place.

Caring for Your Brass Jewellery

To ensure your brooch serves you well and remains beautiful for a long time, avoid contact with water, sweat, perfumes, and other chemicals. Store it in a dry place. To restore its shine, you can polish it from time to time with a soft cloth. For heavier soiling or tarnish, a special brass cleaner (e.g., Brasso) can be used, but proceed with great care around the set stones. Protect the brooch from drops to prevent the crystals from coming loose.
