Kettle Hat with Scalloped Edge, 14th Century, 2 mm Steel
Beauty and Function in One
This war hat is proof that protective armour can also be aesthetically refined. Its characteristic feature is the semi-circular cutouts (scalloping) on the steel bands, which are securely riveted to the skull and brim. This detail not only looks superb but also attests to a high level of craftsmanship. The 2 mm material thickness guarantees high durability in combat. The helmet is classified as battle-ready for staged combat; however, please note that it is not certified protective equipment for modern full-contact sports like buhurt.
Designed for the Warrior
Securely riveted inside the helmet is a high-quality and adjustable padded fabric liner, which effectively absorbs impact and ensures a comfortable fit. A leather cord allows the liner to be easily adjusted to the wearer's head shape. The chin strap is made of cowhide and fitted with a stylish brass buckle. The helmet is produced in two sizes (M and L) to provide ample room for wearing a padded arming cap or a chainmail coif, further enhancing the level of protection and comfort.
The Infantryman's Best Friend
In the 14th century, kettle hats were an integral part of the equipment for infantry troops across Europe. Pikemen, halberdiers, and crossbowmen valued them for their practicality. The wide brim offered excellent protection from overhead strikes, such as from a horseman, while also shielding the face and neck from falling arrows and stones during sieges. Unlike fully enclosed helms, the kettle hat allowed for unrestricted breathing and a good overview of the battlefield, which was crucial for coordination within military units.
Caring for Your Helmet
To ensure your new steel helmet retains its beauty and functionality for many years, give it the proper care it deserves.
- After each use, thoroughly wipe the helmet dry, both inside and out. Pay special attention to the fabric liner.
- Regularly treat the steel surface with a thin layer of oil (e.g., WD-40 or a dedicated conservation oil for arms) to prevent corrosion.
- Treat the leather chin strap with leather care products to keep it supple.
- Store the helmet in a dry place and avoid unnecessary exposure to moisture.
- CAUTION: Do not dry the helmet in direct sunlight or near a strong heat source, as this could damage the leather and fabric components.
