Battle-Ready Haubergeon, 9mm Riveted & Solid Flat Rings, Blackened

Detailed Product Description

This mail shirt, known as a haubergeon, has a classic mid-thigh cut with elbow-length sleeves. It provides excellent protection for the torso and upper arms while maintaining good mobility. Its true strength, however, lies in the construction of its weave. It is crafted from 17-gauge (approx. 1.4 mm) flat rings with a 9 mm inner diameter. As can be seen in the detailed photograph, it features alternating rows of rings securely fastened with a dome rivet, and rows of solid rings punched from a single piece of steel with no seam. The entire armour has a blackened finish, which not only gives it a rugged look but also adds a layer of corrosion resistance.

Who is this Haubergeon for?

Thanks to its extremely durable construction, this armour is intended for:

  • All forms of full-contact combat: HMB, Buhurt, Battle of the Nations, SCA, and other martial sports.
  • Historical reenactors and battle participants who require the highest level of protection and historical accuracy (Vikings, Normans, High Middle Ages).
  • The most demanding LARPers and film productions where authenticity and durability are paramount.

The Ultimate Protection: Riveted and Solid Rings

The combination of riveted and solid rings is one of the most resilient forms of mail weave ever created. The solid rings have no weak seam that could fail. The riveted rings are securely closed and can withstand powerful thrusts that would force open simple butted rings. The result is an armour that provides the maximum possible protection within mail technology.

Always measure yourself over the gambeson or padding you will wear under the armour. If you are between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one.

A Window into History: Armour for Professionals

The haubergeon was a shorter and often lighter version of the full hauberk and became the standard armour for professional warriors in the High Middle Ages (c. 11th-13th centuries). You would have found this exact type of armour on the battlefield at Hastings in 1066. The combination of riveted and solid rings was a premium yet highly efficient manufacturing method that saved time compared to riveting every single ring, without significantly reducing the final strength.

First Use and Armour Care

First Use: Removing Transit Oil

Your new armour will arrive heavily oiled to prevent corrosion during shipping. This excess oil can be easily wiped off with a cloth. You can also "tumble" the mail in a box of sand or wipe it down with a rag soaked in a degreaser.

Long-Term Care

To ensure your armour serves you for a long time:

  • Keep it Dry: After every event, let it air dry and wipe it down.
  • Oil it Regularly: After cleaning, apply a thin coat of preservative oil (WD-40, Ballistol) to prevent rust.
  • Store it Properly: In a dry place, ideally hanging or loosely rolled.
