Bronze Viking Cloak Clasp with Dragon Heads, 10 cm

Design Inspired by Norse Myths

The clasp consists of two symmetrical parts that fit together perfectly with a simple and strong hook-and-eye mechanism. Each part is finished with a detailed head of a mythical dragon, which symbolised power, protection, and primordial chaos in Norse mythology. The dragons' bodies are depicted as a twisted rope, a typical element of Viking art from the 9th to 11th centuries. This type of decoration was often found on jewellery, weapons, and runestones, and it testified to the status and wealth of its owner.

Honest Craftsmanship: The Lost-Wax Method

This piece of jewellery is crafted using the ancient technique of lost-wax casting (cire perdue). This complex process begins with the creation of a detailed wax model, which is then encased in a heat-resistant mould. Once the mould has set, the wax is melted and poured out, leaving a perfect negative impression. Molten bronze is then poured into this cavity. The result is a precise casting with a rich texture and fine details that would be impossible to capture with any other method. Each piece is therefore an original with subtle nuances that attest to honest handcraft.

How to Attach and Use the Clasp

Installing the clasp is very simple. Each of the two parts is equipped with a plate at its end with three holes. Using these holes, you can easily sew the clasp to both edges of your cloak. For maximum strength, we recommend using a strong linen or waxed thread.

  1. Position each part of the clasp at the desired location on the edge of the cloak.
  2. Using a strong thread, carefully sew both parts to the fabric through all three holes.
  3. To fasten the cloak, simply hook the catch into the eye on the opposite side.

This type of cloak fastener is ideal for the heavy woollen fabrics from which historical cloaks were most often made.

Care and Maintenance

Bronze is a durable material that will serve you for many years. Over time, it will acquire a natural patina that adds to its authenticity. If you wish to maintain a shiny appearance, you can gently polish the clasp from time to time with a soft cloth and a suitable metal polish.

  • Do: Wipe the clasp with a dry, soft cloth. Store it in a dry place, ideally in a fabric pouch or jewellery box.
  • Do not: Do not expose the clasp to harsh chemicals, salt water, or abrasive cleaners. Do not attempt to bend it by force, as cast metal can be brittle.
