The Legacy of Warriors: Mail Armour in History

Chainmail, the cornerstone of a warrior's protection for centuries, dominated battlefields from Ancient Rome to the High Middle Ages. The haubergeon, a shorter version of the full-length hauberk, was particularly favoured for its excellent balance of protection and mobility. It offered ample coverage for vital organs without restricting the fighter's dynamic movements. This made it the armour of choice for archers, light cavalry, and infantry who relied on agility. It was always worn over a padded garment, such as a gambeson or arming jack, to absorb the kinetic energy of blows and prevent chafing.

Why Choose This Particular Armour?

Blackened Mild Steel

The mild steel used is a tried-and-tested material offering a fantastic strength-to-weight ratio. The blackened finish not only gives the armour a rugged, authentic look but, more importantly, provides enhanced resistance to rust and corrosion, making maintenance significantly easier.

The Strength of Riveted and Solid Rings

Forget armour made with simple butted rings that can be forced open by a single strong blow. This haubergeon uses the historically accurate and vastly superior method of alternating riveted and solid rings. Every other ring is securely fastened with a round rivet, while the rings in between are stamped from a single piece of steel. The result is an extremely durable weave that will not let you down.

Measure Up and Choose Your Fit

To select the correct size, measure your chest circumference and add the thickness of your gambeson (typically an extra 10-15 cm / 4-6 inches to the circumference). Then, choose from our chart:

Size Your Chest A: Sleeve Length B: Shirt Circumference C: Overall Length D: Sleeve Width
M 86 - 102 cm / 34 - 40" 50.5 cm / 20" 101.5 cm / 40" 122 cm / 48" 25.4 cm / 10"
L 102 - 117 cm / 40 - 46" 55.5 cm / 22" 106.5 cm / 42" 137 cm / 54" 29 cm / 11"
XL 117 - 132 cm / 46 - 52" 61 cm / 24" 111.5 cm / 44" 152.5 cm / 60" 30 cm / 12"
XXL 132 - 147 cm / 52 - 58" 66 cm / 26" 116.5 cm / 45.5" 167.5 cm / 66" 33 cm / 13"

Note: Measurements are for the armour itself. Always allow ample room for a gambeson underneath!

A Tidbit from the Forge

Did you know that making a single chainmail shirt in the Middle Ages was an incredibly laborious task? A skilled armourer had to first produce the wire, wind it on a mandrel, cut the individual rings, flatten their ends, punch holes for the rivets, and finally rivet it all together by hand. A shirt could consist of 20,000 to 50,000 rings, and its creation could take several hundred hours!

How to Care For Your Second Skin

Proper care will ensure your armour serves you for many years to come. It's easier than you think:

  • After Every Use: Always dry it thoroughly. Wipe it down with a dry cloth to remove any sweat or moisture.
  • Preservation: Oil it lightly and regularly. Use a maintenance oil spray (like WD-40 or Ballistol), apply a thin coat, and wipe off any excess. This is your best defence against rust.
  • Storage: Keep it in a dry place. The best way is to hang it on a broad wooden hanger to distribute the weight. Do not store it in a sealed plastic bag where moisture can get trapped.
  • What to Avoid: Never leave your armour wet or store it in a damp cellar. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or coarse abrasives that could damage the blackened finish. Do not attempt to bend or pry open the rings with tools.
