Medieval Sword Type XI Oakeshott with Leather Scabbard, Class C

Sword class C, NO WARRANTY!

Appearance and Construction:

At first glance, the classic silhouette of a High Medieval one-handed sword is striking. The sword's blade is 80 cm long and features a characteristic fuller, 66 cm in length, running down most of its length, which reduces weight and improves balance. The blade width at the simple, straight crossguard is 49 mm, tapering smoothly towards the point to 37.41 mm (measured 10 cm from the tip). The striking edge has a thickness of approximately 2.40 mm, adhering to the safety standards for Class C fencing replicas.

The hilt of the sword comprises a straight crossguard measuring 19 cm in length and a Brazil nut-shaped pommel (Oakeshott Type I); both parts are crafted from solid brass. The photograph shows an engraved cross on the pommel. The 13 cm grip is robustly constructed: a steel core forms the base, overlaid with wood, and then tightly wrapped in high-quality, dark-coloured cowhide leather for a secure and comfortable hold. The overall length of the sword is 98.5 cm.

Historical Context:

Type XI swords were typical of the High Middle Ages, roughly from the 11th to the 14th century. They were versatile weapons, valued for their balance between cutting and thrusting capabilities, although their primary purpose was often cutting. The "Brazil nut" pommel (Type I) is also characteristic of this era. This sword, therefore, evokes the age of knights and crusades.

Accessories:

The sword comes with a simple yet functional scabbard made of genuine buffalo leather in a brown colour, weighing 363 g. It is fitted with leather loops for hanging from a belt (no belt is included).

Potential Uses:

Thanks to its construction and blunt edge (Class C), this sword is particularly suitable for:

  1. Historical Fencing Practice: Ideal for practising techniques and forms without the risk of serious injury from a sharp edge.
  2. Historical Re-enactment: An authentic accessory for the costume of a knight or soldier from the High Medieval period.
  3. Cosplay: A suitable accessory for costumes inspired by the Middle Ages or fantasy genres.
  4. Decoration: An impressive display piece for interiors with a historical theme.
  5. Theatre and Film: A safe prop for stage performances (with an emphasis on safety).

Safe Use Guidelines:

  • Never use this sword against people or animals without appropriate protective equipment and training!
  • This is a Class C weapon supplied without warranty. It is not intended for uncontrolled sparring, striking hard objects, or careless handling. The blade may break.
  • Always wear certified protective gear (mask, gloves, gambeson, etc.) when practising fencing.
  • Before each use, inspect the sword's condition – check the tightness of the hilt and look for any cracks in the blade.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings when handling the sword to avoid endangering others.
  • Store the sword out of reach of children and unauthorised persons, ideally in its scabbard.

This sword represents a solid entry point into the world of historical fencing and re-enactment.
