Appearance and Classification: A European High Medieval Sword
The sword features a straight, double-edged blade, 79 cm (approx. 31.1 in) long, that tapers evenly to a sharp point. The blade is equipped with a 50 cm (approx. 19.7 in) long fuller for improved balance and weight reduction. It is crafted from high-quality ČSN 14260 spring steel, oil-hardened to a hardness of approximately 47 HRC. This material, favored by Pavel Leier, guarantees resilience and flexibility but is not stainless and therefore requires regular maintenance.
The symmetrical guard is straight, relatively long (23 cm / approx. 9.1 in), and has a simple, functional design with slightly flared ends. Together with the pommel, which has a maximum width of 7.5 cm (approx. 3.0 in) and a shape reminiscent of a mushroom or a flask stopper (in Oakeshott typology, it could resemble Type T), it forms a robust steel hilt assembly (cast). The 14 cm (approx. 5.5 in) grip is wooden, carefully wrapped with durable brown leather, ensuring a secure and comfortable hold. The overall length of the sword is 102.8 cm (approx. 40.5 in), and the total weight of the sword (blunt version) is 1992 g (approx. 4.39 lbs). The precise workmanship reflects the mastery of Pavel Leier.
With its overall shape – the straight, tapering blade suitable for both cut and thrust, the straight guard, and the typical pommel – the "Onis" sword evokes the arming swords (one-handed knightly swords) used from approximately the 12th to the 14th century. In Oakeshott's typology, it could bear characteristics of a Type XIIa blade and a Type T pommel. It is not a replica of a specific famous weapon but a successful interpretation of the period style from the hands of an experienced blacksmith.
Variants and Usage: From Collector's Item to HEMA Training Sword
You can order it in two variants:
- Sharp Version: Suitable as a collector's item, part of a costume, or for cutting practice (tameshigiri) on appropriate materials (with utmost caution!).
- Blunt Version (Class B): Specially adapted for historical or stage combat. The blade edge has a thickness of 2-3 mm, and the tip is rounded, allowing for safer use in contact fencing with appropriate gear and training. With a point of balance approximately 4.5 cm (approx. 1.8 in) from the guard, this sword is very manageable.
This sword is excellently suited for history enthusiasts, members of historical fencing groups, theatrical performances, or as an impressive addition to your collection or costume for LARP events and historical festivals.
Safety Guidelines and Care for Your Hand-Forged Sword
Remember that even a blunt sword is still a weapon and requires responsible handling.
- Always handle the sword with utmost caution and respect. You are fully responsible for any consequences of its use.
- When fencing, try to parry blows with the flat of the blade, not edge-on-edge, to prevent damage. Execute cuts with proper technique and without excessive force.
- Inspect the sword before each use. File down any nicks or sharp spots on the edge of the blunt blade (which is normal wear and tear) with a file or sandpaper.
- The blade steel is not stainless, so clean and conserve it with oil after each use (especially after contact with skin) to prevent corrosion.
- Over time, the guard may become loose. In such a case, it must be re-secured (e.g., by re-peening, tightening the pommel), or as a temporary solution, you can fill the gap with a tight winding (e.g., fishing line).
- Store the sword safely and out of reach of children.
