Viking Spectacle Helmet 'Gjermundbu' with Mail Aventail, 16 Gauge Steel

A Detailed Look at the Helmet

Helm Bowl and Construction

The bowl of the helmet is carefully assembled from several steel plates, interconnected and reinforced with steel bands. All joints are secured with robust rivets, which not only increases the structural strength but also enhances its historical look. The hammered surface gives the helmet a battle-worn appearance, as if it has seen many conflicts.

The Iconic Spectacle Guard

The dominant feature is the distinctive face guard, known as a 'spectacle' guard. It effectively protects the eyes, nose, and cheekbones without significantly obstructing the field of vision. Its shape is a hallmark of Norse helmets from the 9th and 10th centuries and will give your character a menacing yet majestic presence.

Chainmail Neck Protection

Attached to the helmet is a large mail aventail, which reliably covers the neck, nape, and upper shoulders. It is woven from butted steel rings, a common and perfectly adequate construction for replicas in this price range.

How You Can Use It

This Viking helmet is an ideal choice for:

  • LARP and Historical Reenactment: Perfectly complements your costume as a Viking warrior, Varangian guard, or Norse chieftain.
  • Cosplay: Excellent for characters inspired by Norse mythology and fantasy sagas.
  • Theatre and Film: Its authentic look makes it suitable for use on stage or in front of the camera.
  • Decoration and Collection: It will stand out as a centrepiece in your collection or home decor.

Please Note: This helmet is primarily a costume accessory. It is not certified personal protective equipment and is not designed to withstand strong impacts. Therefore, it is not suitable for full-contact combat such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations.

A Piece of History

The most famous and the only complete Viking helmet ever found is the Gjermundbu helmet, discovered in a rich chieftain's burial mound in Norway in 1943. It was found alongside a sword, axes, spears, and a complete mail shirt. This discovery completely changed historians' understanding of Viking warrior appearance and debunked the popular myth of horned helmets, for which there is no historical evidence whatsoever.

Caring for Your New Armour

To ensure your helmet lasts a long time and remains rust-free, follow a few simple steps. The product is shipped pre-oiled by the manufacturer. Before first use, wipe off the oil with a dry cloth. After each use, thoroughly dry the helmet inside and out. Periodically, wipe it down with a thin coat of maintenance oil (like WD-40 or Ballistol) and store it in a dry place.
