Viking Wool Coat "Haithabu" Klappenrock, 100% Recycled Wool, Brown-Green

Design Inspired by the Elite of the 8th-11th Centuries

This coat, known as a Klappenrock, represents a type of outer garment worn by high-status men—jarls, nobles, and wealthy merchants—throughout Northern and Eastern Europe during the Viking Age. Its design is based on archaeological finds and pictorial evidence from the 8th to 11th centuries, particularly from centres like Hedeby and Birka.

The characteristic feature is the wrap-front, which overlaps and is typically secured with a belt (belt not included). The coat is made from robust and eco-friendly 100% recycled wool with a fabric weight of 420 g/m². This material has excellent insulating properties, is naturally breathable, and durable.

The edges of the coat, including the collar and cuffs, are adorned with a striking green trim woven in a diamond twill pattern (a blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon, 320 g/m²). This type of weave was popular in the Viking Age, and its use as a trim signalled the wealth and status of the owner. The loose, straight cut and wide sleeves allow for comfortable layering over a tunic and provide complete freedom of movement.

Please note: The belt, pouch, and other accessories shown in the photographs are not included.

Historical Context: A Garment of Prestige from Hedeby and Birka

Finds from Hedeby and Birka, two of the most significant Viking trade and craft centres, confirm the existence of such elaborate outer garments. The Klappenrock was not just a practical piece of clothing against the cold; it was a clear status symbol. The materials used, such as high-quality wool, and intricate details, like the woven twill trim, distinguished the elite from the common folk. To wear such a coat was to display one's standing in society.

How to Care for Your Wool Coat

To ensure your wool coat serves you well for as long as possible and maintains its appearance:

  • We recommend hand washing in cold water or using a gentle wool cycle in the washing machine (do not spin).
  • Use only a mild detergent specifically designed for wool.
  • Do not tumble dry! After washing, lay the coat flat on a drying rack, reshape it, and let it air dry.
  • If necessary, steam iron on a low heat setting (wool setting).
  • Spot clean minor stains with a damp cloth and a mild detergent.
  • Do not bleach or dry clean.

Complete Your Jarl's Outfit

This coat is the perfect foundation for your elite costume. You will need a quality leather belt to secure it. It pairs wonderfully with woollen trousers, like our Viking Trousers "Hedeby" (No. 301111BL), which the model wears in one of the photos. Don't forget an authentic leather pouch and historical footwear to complete the entire look.

Size Chart

To choose the correct size, measure your chest circumference and compare it with the chart. Remember that the coat is worn over other layers of clothing (e.g., a tunic).
