Heavy Cotton Viking Tunic for Men

A Versatile Viking and Medieval Costume Base

The tunic has a loose body, straight long sleeves and a rounded neckline with a short front slit. Depending on the wearer’s height, it reaches approximately to mid-thigh. You can leave it hanging naturally or gather it at the waist with a belt. Its plain colour makes it easy to pair with historical trousers, leg wraps, a hood, cloak and leather accessories.

The cut is particularly well suited to clothing inspired by the Viking Age and early medieval period. Its restrained appearance can also be used for a Slavic warrior, Norse trader, craftsman, archer, mercenary or fantasy adventurer.

Historical Background

Simple tunics were among the most widespread European garments for many centuries. During the Viking Age, approximately the 8th to 11th centuries, they were worn by men from different levels of society. Depending on climate, status and occupation, a tunic could be combined with an under-shirt, woollen outer garment, cloak or a belt carrying a pouch and working tools.

Historical tunics in northern and central Europe were primarily made from wool or linen. Cotton was not a typical material for everyday Viking clothing. This cotton version should therefore be viewed as a practical modern interpretation, offering easier care, good breathability and reliable comfort during full-day events.

How to Wear the Tunic

Pull the tunic over your head and wear it loose or gathered with a leather or woven belt. Choose a size corresponding to your chest measurement when using it beneath additional clothing. For a noticeably relaxed fit, or when wearing a thick undergarment underneath, we recommend choosing one size larger.

When layering the tunic beneath armour, make sure that the fabric does not form thick folds beneath the arms, inside the elbows or under the belt. The tunic itself does not provide protection against impacts, cuts or thrusts.

Measure horizontally around the fullest part of your chest. Keep the tape close to the body without pulling it tight. When your measurement falls between two sizes, or when you prefer a loose fit, choose the larger option.

Care and Safety

• Wash the tunic separately before its first use.
• Wash inside out with similar colours at no more than 40°C / 104°F on a gentle cycle.
• Do not use chlorine bleach.
• Air drying is recommended to reduce shrinkage and colour fading.
• When tumble drying, use a low-temperature setting only.
• Iron inside out at a temperature suitable for cotton.
• Make sure the garment is completely dry before storage.

Keep the cotton tunic away from naked flames and glowing embers. Take particular care with its loose sleeves and lower hem when standing near a campfire.

Recommended Accessories

For a Viking Age or early medieval outfit, we recommend combining the tunic with a leather belt, medieval belt pouch, wool cloak, leg wraps and plain historical trousers. A warrior costume may be completed with a gambeson, mail armour or a helmet appropriate to the chosen period. The belt, trousers, footwear, jewellery, pouches, weapons and other accessories shown in the photographs are not included.
