Linen Viking Tunic Viborg – Authentic 11th Century Shirt
Design Based on Archaeology
The Viborg shirt is famous for its sophisticated tailoring, which sets it apart from simpler T-shaped tunics. We have faithfully recreated its distinct features:
- Square Chest Panel: The most recognizable feature of the Viborg find is the square panel on the chest and back. This design allowed for efficient use of the loom-width of the fabric.
- Offset Neck Slit: The neckline features an asymmetrical slit on the right side with self-fabric ties, allowing you to adjust the fit without needing a brooch.
- Complex Sleeve Construction: The sleeves are pieced together with gussets, just like the original, ensuring you can move your arms freely for combat or work.
- Side Slits: Located at the bottom hem, these slits allow for easy movement when walking, running, or fighting.
Material and Historical Usage
Linen was the primary material for undergarments in the Viking and early medieval periods. It is durable, comfortable against the skin, and protects your outer woolen layers from sweat. The fabric weight is 220 gsm, providing a sturdy yet breathable feel. The natural, un-dyed beige colour reflects the reality of historical undergarments.
You can wear this tunic as a historically accurate base layer under a woolen tunic or coat, or wear it on its own during hot summer days. It is an ideal piece for depicting Vikings, Normans, or other 11th-century Europeans.
Care Instructions
To keep your linen tunic looking its best and serving you well for years to come, please follow these care guidelines:
- Machine wash at a maximum of 40°C (104°F).
- Do not use bleach and do not tumble dry, as this can damage the natural fibres.
- Hang dry for the best results.
- Iron on a warm setting if needed, ideally while the fabric is still slightly damp.
Please Note: This product includes the tunic only. The belt, pouch, trousers, boots, and sword shown in the photos are for illustrative purposes and are not included. As this is a handmade product using natural materials, slight variations in weave or tone may occur.
