Long-Sleeved Chainmail Hauberk, 10mm Butted Mild Steel, Blackened

Detailed Product Description

This chainmail shirt is crafted in a full, mid-thigh length and features long sleeves that protect the entire arms. To ensure maximum mobility, whether in combat or on horseback, the shirt is designed with splits in the front and rear. The armour is hand-woven in the traditional 4-in-1 pattern from round butted rings with a 10 mm inner diameter. They are made from 16-gauge (approx. 1.6 mm) mild steel wire. The entire shirt has a blackened finish, giving it a rugged, weathered look while also providing a basic layer of protection against corrosion.

Who Is This Hauberk For?

Thanks to its construction, this shirt is ideal for:

  • LARP and Fantasy Events: Provides a great look and the basic protection that meets the rules of most events.
  • Historical Fairs and Renaissance Festivals: A perfect and affordable foundation for a knight, Viking, or mercenary costume.
  • Theatre, Film, and Cosplay: Creates an authentic visual impression without the high cost of a riveted version.
  • Light (Non-Contact) Reenactment: Suitable for character portrayal, not for full-contact fencing.

Important Notice on Combat-Readiness

This chainmail shirt is made from butted rings. It is an excellent choice for costume and LARP use, but it is NOT designed or safe for full-contact combat, such as HMB, buhurt, or historical fencing. Butted rings can be forced open by a strong blow. For these activities, always choose more durable riveted armour.

Size Chart

Always measure yourself over the gambeson or padding you will wear under the armour. If you are between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one.

Historical Context and a Practical Tip

For centuries (c. 10th-13th), the chainmail hauberk was the primary torso and arm protection for every professional soldier, from Norman knights to Crusaders. It was a versatile and highly valued piece of armour. Even then, warriors were conscious of its weight. This led to a simple but ingenious trick that you can also use today: always wear your mail with a sturdy belt cinched at the waist. The belt transfers a significant portion of the weight from your shoulders to your hips, dramatically increasing comfort during all-day wear and improving your stamina.

How to Care for Your Armour

To make your blackened mail shirt last, just follow a few simple rules:

  • Keep it Dry: After every event, let the shirt air dry completely to prevent rust from forming under the blackening.
  • Oil it Lightly: Before long-term storage, give it a light spray with a preservative oil. Wipe off the excess so it doesn't needlessly stain other items.
  • Expect Repairs: With butted mail, it's normal for a ring to open up now and then. Always have two pairs of pliers and a few spare rings on hand for a quick fix in the field.
