The Heart of the Shield in History
The shield boss was not merely passive protection. Its massive, convex shape actively deflected the blows of swords and axes, protecting not only the warrior's hand but also the wooden body of the shield from destruction. In close combat, the umbo also became an offensive weapon. A punch with the boss to the face or an opponent's shield could create the decisive moment in a duel.
An Archaeological Find
During the excavation of the famous Gokstad ship in Norway, 32 round shields were found on board. Almost all were equipped with an iron boss of a very similar type, confirming that this is a historically faithful design that was widespread in the Early Middle Ages.
Installation Guide
- Cut a hand-sized hole in your wooden shield board.
- Place the boss over the opening and align it.
- Mark the positions of the mounting holes.
- Drill the corresponding holes in the shield.
- Securely rivet the boss in place using the included rivets and washers.
- For full functionality, add a wooden grip on the inside, underneath the boss.
Care Instructions
Your shield boss is made from honest steel and requires basic maintenance. After each use, especially in damp conditions, wipe the boss thoroughly dry. Regularly apply a thin coat of conservation oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40). If surface rust appears over time, it can be easily removed with fine steel wool, after which you should re-oil the area.
