The History of Horn Vessels
Vessels made from horn are among the oldest in history, and their popularity has endured for millennia. For our ancestors, horn was a valuable and readily available material—a by-product of raising livestock. It was lightweight, durable, and relatively easy to work with. While the wealthy could afford cups made of metal or glass, for most people, a horn tankard was a reliable and common choice for both daily use and festive occasions.
A Point of Interest: Horn as the Plastic of the Middle Ages
Thanks to its properties, horn was an incredibly versatile material, essentially the "plastic of the past." When heated in hot water or over a fire, it softens and can be shaped, pressed, and cut. Once cooled, it retains its new shape. In addition to drinking vessels, a wide range of everyday items were made from it: combs, knife and tool handles, buttons, spoons, and even thin, translucent sheets that served as panes for lanterns or small windows where glass was too expensive.
Care Instructions and Important Warnings
Natural horn is beautiful but requires specific care to last as long as possible. Please follow these instructions.
How to Care for Your Tankard
- Hand-wash only: Always wash the tankard by hand in lukewarm water using a mild soap. Then, rinse it thoroughly with clean water.
- Dry carefully: Immediately dry the tankard with a soft cloth after washing. Do not let it stand in water or leave it to dry on a radiator.
- Occasional Maintenance: You can occasionally wipe the outer surface with a thin layer of natural oil (e.g., coconut oil) to help the material retain its elasticity and shine.
What to Absolutely Avoid
- NEVER use a dishwasher: The extreme heat and chemicals in a dishwasher would permanently damage and warp the tankard.
- NO hot beverages: Do not pour coffee, tea, or other hot liquids into it. This could damage both the horn and the inner resin lining.
- LIMITATIONS on alcohol: The tankard is not intended for beverages with an alcohol content above 20% ABV. Strong spirits can damage the protective inner layer.
- NO highly acidic beverages: Pure citrus juices and other highly acidic drinks can, over time, damage the inner coating.
- NO prolonged soaking: Do not leave drinks sitting in the tankard for hours or overnight.
- NEVER use a microwave: Using the tankard in a microwave would lead to its destruction.
