Historical Context and Traditional Craftsmanship
Drinking vessels made of horn have accompanied humanity since antiquity and enjoyed immense popularity particularly among Germanic and Scandinavian tribes during the Early Middle Ages (approximately from the 8th to the 11th century). While classical drinking horns had to be placed in special stands or held constantly in hand, horn tankards with an integrated handle represented the pinnacle of contemporary craftsmanship and practicality. This product is crafted using traditional methods from ethically sourced cattle horn. Because horn is a purely organic material, the color and natural patterns vary significantly from piece to piece, spanning a gorgeous palette from deep black and mottled brown to ivory cream tones. In history, such vessels were used for drinking mead and ale during festive gatherings and rituals (the so-called Sumbl).

Care Instructions and Safety Guidelines
As this is a purely natural, organic material, the product requires specific handling to ensure it serves you well for many years. Please bear in mind that due to the natural properties of horn, the material may naturally flex or develop hairline cracks over time. It is strictly forbidden to wash the horn tankard in a dishwasher or heat it in a microwave! Exposure to high temperatures and harsh chemicals would cause immediate and permanent damage, warping, or cracking of the horn.
For safe usage, please adhere to the following rules:
- Suitable beverages: The tankard is ideal for beer, mead, wine, or pure water (cool to lukewarm liquids).
- Unsuitable beverages: Hot drinks (coffee, tea), acidic soft drinks (juices, cola), and any spirits with an alcohol content above 20% do not belong in the tankard.
- Cleaning: Before the first use and after every feast, wash the tankard by hand with lukewarm water without using aggressive detergents, and dry it immediately.
- Maintenance: To extend its lifespan and prevent the material from drying out, we recommend treating the surface of the horn from time to time with pure beeswax or vegetable oil. The interior of the horn is lined with a resin lacquer certified for food contact and meets strict hygiene standards.
