Flat Leather Lace 4x3 mm (50-Metre Spool)

A Versatile Helper for Your Projects, Quality You Can Rely On

This isn't just an ordinary cord. It is cut from high-quality and tough buffalo leather into a practical flat profile measuring approximately 4x3 mm. This makes it exceptionally strong and resistant to tearing, yet flexible enough for easy tying and lacing. The generous 50-metre length on a convenient spool ensures you will have plenty of material for extensive projects or numerous repairs to your kit.

A Wide Range of Applications

Thanks to its strength and versatility, this leather lace is indispensable for any DIYer, crafter, or history and fantasy enthusiast. Here are just a few examples of how it can be useful:

  • Armour Repair and Making: Ideal for tying together lamellar or brigandine armour, attaching plates, or repairing damaged sections.
  • Lacing Equipment: Perfect for lacing bracers, leather guards, helmet liners, or gambesons.
  • Costume Making: Use it as both a decorative and functional element on garments, pouches, boots, and other accessories.
  • Crafting: Excellent for jewellery making, stringing amulets, wrapping handles, or as a binding material in basketry.
  • Camping and Outdoors: Serves as a durable cord for securing gear, building a shelter, or for other emergency repairs.

Leather Laces in History

Leather cords and laces were among the most versatile materials in human history. Long before the invention of modern fasteners, they were what held the world together. They were used for literally everything—from tying spear and axe heads, to making footwear and clothing, stitching tents and sails, and even for the complex systems that connected the individual pieces of plate armour.

Interesting Fact: Medieval Arming "Points"

In the High and Late Middle Ages, pieces of plate armour, such as pauldrons, cuisses, or greaves, were not attached with buckles but were instead tied to a padded arming doublet or gambeson using dozens of short leather laces called "points." These points often had metal tips known as "aglets" to make threading through eyelets easier. An entire suit of knightly armour was essentially a complex puzzle held together by dozens of these essential leather laces.

Tips for Working with the Lace

To make threading through holes easier, we recommend skiving the end of the lace to a point with a sharp knife. If you want to increase the lace's resistance to water and abrasion, especially for outdoor use, you can treat it with beeswax or a natural oil. This will extend its lifespan and maintain its flexibility.
