In the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, elastic materials did not exist, so long chausses and hose had to be fastened mechanically. In addition to being tied to a belt or to under-breeches (braies), leather or textile garters tied just below the knee were very frequently used. They were worn by both men and women across all social classes. These narrow leather straps are simply wrapped around the leg over the stocking and fastened with the small brass buckle, preventing the fabric from bunching and slipping down.

If you provide your exact leg circumference just below the knee in the order notes, we will punch custom holes into the leather for you. Otherwise, the garters will be supplied without punched holes, allowing you to adjust their placement at home depending on the thickness of the layers of your historical hose and chausses.

Genuine leather deserves regular care so it does not lose its flexibility, dry out, or start to crack. Occasionally, lightly rub the garters with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get soaked at a historical event or sweat heavily, let the straps dry naturally at a normal room temperature. Strictly avoid drying them on a hot radiator, near an open flame, or in harsh sunlight. Please bear in mind that this is a handcrafted product made from a natural material. Slight variations in colour and surface texture compared to the photographs are a natural characteristic of leather, making every pair a true original.
