French Napoleonic Hussar Saber AN XI – Klingenthal 1813 – Battle Ready

A Weapon That Wrote European History

The Model AN XI (introduced in the 11th year of the Republic, i.e., 1802/1803) was designed with one goal: speed and efficiency. The curved blade is optimized for devastating slashing attacks from the back of a galloping horse, while the massive brass basket guard protects the rider's hand in the chaos of battle. On the spine of this replica's blade, you will find an engraved inscription in script: "Mfture Impale du Klingenthal Octobre 1813". This stands for "Manufacture Impériale" and refers to the famous armory in Klingenthal, Alsace, which produced the finest blades for Napoleon's army just before the fateful Battle of the Nations at Leipzig.

Materials and Craftsmanship

This replica by Windlass Steelcrafts® is not just a wall decoration. It is crafted with a focus on functionality and historical fidelity.

  • Blade: Hand-forged from 1075 High Carbon Steel. It is flexible yet stiff enough for a thrust. Note: The blade is delivered fully sharpened.
  • Hilt: The grip is wrapped in black leather and reinforced with twisted brass wire, ensuring a firm grip even when wearing gloves. The three-bar guard made of solid brass gives the weapon its typical elegance and robustness.
  • Scabbard: Includes a heavy steel scabbard with two suspension rings, exactly as required in field conditions to protect the weapon.

Safety and Usage Instructions

Since this is a replica with a sharp edge, strict safety rules must be followed:

  • Not for Stage Combat: Never use this saber for fencing against another steel weapon ("steel-on-steel"). The sharp, fine edge would be irreparably damaged upon impact, and flying chips could cause injury.
  • Cutting Tests: The weapon is suitable for experienced fencers to perform cutting tests (tameshigiri) on soft targets, but strictly at your own risk and using protective gear.
  • Handling: Exercise extreme caution when drawing and sheathing the saber to avoid cutting yourself or bystanders.

Saber Care

To ensure this beauty lasts for ages, it needs some love. The carbon steel blade is prone to corrosion, so wipe it down after every touch and preserve it with gun oil or microcrystalline wax. You can polish the brass parts with metal polish, but many collectors prefer the natural patina that gives the weapon a "battle-hardened" look.
