Chainmail Haubergeon, Short Sleeves, 10mm Butted Rings (1.3mm/16G)

The Basic Protection for Every Warrior

This haubergeon is designed with practicality in mind. The cut reaches approximately mid-thigh, and the short, wide sleeves give you full freedom of movement at the elbows, which is crucial for combat and regular camp activities. The V-neck makes it easy to pull on over your head. The shirt is made from mild steel, which is not stainless, giving it an authentic, period-correct appearance.

The rings are "butted" – meaning the ends of the wire are pressed together but are not riveted. This type of chainmail is significantly more affordable and lighter than fully riveted mail and is perfect for costume purposes, LARP, and theatre, where appearance and basic protection are key.

Important Notice: Precisely because this is a shirt with butted (non-riveted) rings, it is not designed or suitable for full-contact combat, such as buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), or for aggressive stage combat. The rings could be forced open upon heavy impact. For those activities, riveted mail must be chosen.

What is a Haubergeon?

A haubergeon (or *hauberget*) is the historical term for a shorter version of the full chainmail shirt, the *hauberk*. While a full hauberk could reach the knees and had long sleeves (and sometimes an integrated coif), the haubergeon was its lighter, shorter counterpart, often reaching mid-thigh with sleeves to the elbow or shorter. It was particularly popular in the 12th to 14th centuries. It was worn by foot soldiers and archers as their primary armour over a gambeson, as well as by knights who wore it beneath their developing plate armour.

Size Chart

When choosing your size, remember that you will always wear the chainmail shirt over an undergarment and ideally over a padded gambeson. The measurements provided are taken from the shirt lying flat. We recommend measuring your chest circumference *with* your gambeson on and choosing a size with ample room.

Size Chest Width (Flat Measure) Chest Circumference (approx.) Sleeve Length (from shoulder) Total Length (from shoulder)
M 60.9 cm (24 in) ~122 cm (48 in) 25 cm (9.8 in) 86 cm (33.9 in)
L 68.5 cm (27 in) ~137 cm (54 in) 27.9 cm (11 in) 91 cm (35.8 in)
XL 76 cm (30 in) ~152 cm (60 in) 30 cm (11.8 in) 96.5 cm (38 in)

(Note: Data is from the manufacturer's chart, "Chest Width" is half the circumference. The original chart's "Inches" label is a typo; the values are clearly cm, converted here for convenience.)

Care for Your Chainmail

Your chainmail shirt is made from mild steel, which means it is NOT stainless. Its greatest enemy is rust.

  • After each use (especially after sweating or getting wet), dry the mail thoroughly. Do not leave it lying in damp grass or in a bag.
  • For storage, conserve it well. A thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, mineral oil) or a spray-on conservation wax works best.
  • Store it in a dry, ventilated place. Never store it in a plastic bag – this traps moisture.
  • Before wearing it again, we recommend wiping off excess oil with a dry cloth to avoid staining your gambeson.
