Stainless Steel Haubergeon: Riveted & Solid Flat Rings 9mm
Modern Material in Historical Guise
The main advantage of this armour is the use of stainless steel. This means an end to rust, oily rags, and endless preservation. Whether you get wet on the battlefield or sweat in the heat of combat, your armour remains shiny and strong. The mesh construction is based on historical finds – utilizing the alternating row technique:
- Riveted Flat Rings: Ensure a strong connection; riveting prevents the ring from spreading upon impact.
- Solid (Punched) Flat Rings: Form a solid structure without joins, increasing the overall integrity of the armour.
The rings have an internal diameter of 9 mm, which is a standard size for good mobility and protection. Important Note: The photos show the haubergeon worn over a gambeson with a collar and cuffs. This gambeson is not included in the delivery. The product consists only of the chainmail shirt itself.
When and How to Use This Armour
A haubergeon is a shorter version of a chainmail shirt, usually reaching mid-thigh, with shorter sleeves. Historically, it was popular for its lighter weight compared to the long hauberk. This model is ideal for:
- LARP and Fantasy Battles: Where you will appreciate its maintenance-free nature and durability.
- Costuming: For portraying Vikings, Norman foot soldiers, or mercenaries.
- Theatre and Film: Thanks to its consistent shine, it always looks excellent on camera.
Care and Safety
Maintenance is trivial. If the armour is dirty (mud, blood, dust), simply rinse it with water, even in the shower, and let it dry. No oiling is needed.
Safety Warning: While stainless steel is strong, remember that chainmail alone dampens impacts only minimally. It will not protect you against blunt force weapons (maces, axes) without a high-quality underlayer. We strongly recommend wearing a padded gambeson under this shirt. The chainmail distributes the cut, while the gambeson cushions the blow. Without a gambeson, strong hits can cause fractures or bruises.
