French Napoleonic Cuirassier Sword Model 1801 – Heavy Cavalry Pallasch
Construction and Use
This sword is no toy. It is a robust piece of steel weighing over 3 lbs. French military doctrine of the time favoured the thrust over the cut, which is why the weapon features a straight, massive blade with double fullers that tapers distally for better balance. The blade is over 1/4" thick at the hilt, giving it the rigidity needed to pierce obstacles. The hilt consists of a brass basket with four bars (one main knuckle bow and three side bars) that perfectly protect the hand. The grip is wood, covered in black leather, and reinforced with twisted brass wire.
You can use this replica primarily as:
- A Premium Costume Accessory: For Napoleonic Wars re-enactment (portraying a Cuirassier or heavy trooper).
- A Collector's Piece: The polished brass and steel look magnificent on a wall or in a display cabinet.
- Cutting Practice (Tameshigiri): Thanks to the 1075 carbon steel blade and sharpened edge, it is possible to perform cutting tests on soft targets (e.g., tatami mats, fruit), provided you have the appropriate experience.
Historical Context
During the First Empire, French Cuirassiers were the symbol of striking power. While light cavalry (Hussars, Chasseurs à cheval) manoeuvred and harassed the flanks, the Cuirassiers were tasked with smashing through the centre of the enemy formation. Although firearms were already dominant, the cuirass (breast and backplate) combined with a heavy helmet adorned with horsehair provided the rider with both a psychological and physical advantage. This specific sword model (An IX/1801) was designed to utilise the momentum of horse and rider for a crushing thrusting attack, often fatal against infantry and other cavalry alike. British opponents who faced these riders often described their charge as a terrifying, unstoppable tide.
Care and Maintenance
To keep this pallasch in perfect condition for years to come, please give it some care:
- Steel Blade and Scabbard: As this is high carbon steel (not stainless), it is prone to rust. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch or use and preserve it with a suitable gun oil or mineral oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol).
- Brass Hilt: Brass oxidises naturally over time and darkens. If you wish to maintain a high shine, use a metal polish. If you prefer a "battle-worn" look, simply let it develop a patina.
- Leather Grip: Treat the leather occasionally with a leather conditioner to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
Safety Warning
WARNING: This sword features a sharp blade and a pointed tip. It is designed for collecting or solitary cutting practice. It is strictly NOT intended for contact fencing (HEMA sparring, stage combat) or "blade-on-blade" duelling. While the steel is of high quality, the sharp edge would chip upon impact with another weapon, posing a serious risk of injury. always handle the weapon with extreme caution.
We recommend pairing this sword with a suitable leather frog or belt hanger to ensure the weight is distributed correctly.
