Viking Warrior Bearded Axe "Skeggøx" with Leather-Wrapped Haft
Appearance and Construction of the Battle Axe
This single-handed Viking axe impresses at first glance with its authentic and robust craftsmanship. The axe head is hand-forged from high-quality carbon steel and left with a raw, naturally dark finish that evokes the feel of a true historical weapon. Its shape corresponds to the typical Viking "bearded axe" (or Skeggøx in Old Norse), where the lower part of the blade edge extends below the socket of the haft.
The haft is crafted from light-coloured and strong ash wood. To ensure the best and most secure grip, it is largely wrapped with straps of genuine brown leather. The wrapping starts at the axe head and continues in an elegant criss-cross pattern along most of its length. The lower part of the haft is then wrapped with a solid layer of leather, forming a comfortable and non-slip handle. To protect the blade during transport or wear, the axe comes with a simple yet functional leather sheath, secured with a leather thong.
Use: Past and Present
Today, you can use this axe as the perfect accessory for your costume of a Viking, Norse warrior, or Varangian. It is an ideal prop for LARP, historical reenactment, theatre performances, or film productions. It will also look fantastic as a decorative piece in your home, adding a touch of the rugged North.
In the Early Middle Ages, the axe was an indispensable companion for a Viking. It was not just a weapon but also a universal tool for everyday work—from felling trees and building ships to carving wood. In combat, the "bearded" axe was particularly effective. Its extended blade, the so-called beard, not only allowed for deep cutting blows but could also be used to hook and pull down an opponent's shield or to disarm them.
A Tidbit from History: A Symbol of Status
Although we often associate axes with common warriors, some examples were true works of art and symbols of high status. For instance, the famous Mammen Axe, found in Denmark and dated to the 10th century, is decorated with intricate engravings and silver inlay. This proves that an axe in the hands of a jarl or a king could be as prestigious a weapon as a richly decorated sword.

Care and Safety
Care Instructions
The axe head is made of carbon steel, which can rust over time. To prevent this, wipe the blade dry after each use and regularly apply a thin layer of protective oil. The leather wrap and sheath can be treated with a leather conditioner from time to time to maintain their suppleness and appearance. Store the axe in a dry place.
