Red Gothic Leather Shoes with Strap and Rubber Sole
Historical Context and Purpose of the Footwear
In the 14th and 15th centuries, footwear with a noticeably elongated toe, so-called poulaines or crakows, was a massive fashion hit throughout Gothic Europe. This specific model represents a more moderate and much more practical version for walking, worn primarily by wealthier burghers, merchants, and nobility for everyday wear. The bold red leather colour was historically a clear sign of luxury and high social standing, as high-quality dyeing with natural pigments to achieve red was very expensive. The shallow cutout on the instep also facilitated comfortable slipping on.
Modern Usage and Safety Warnings
Currently, you will perfectly utilize these shoes in historical re-enactment and cosplay, where you will appreciate the compromise between the period look of the upper and the safety of the modern sole. Remember, however, that from a safety perspective, these are historical walking shoes. The boots are by no means intended for demanding combat deployment. They are not suitable for forceful full-contact fencing, HEMA tournaments, or as foot protection in the harsh melee of a buhurt battle, as they do not contain any reinforced protective elements against slashes or crushing.
Instructions for Proper Care
To ensure the shoes serve you as long as possible, they are treated from the factory with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. To maintain softness, pliability, and moisture resistance, we recommend regularly cleaning and nourishing the leather. The balm impregnates the leather and slightly darkens it. To revive the vibrant colour and cover minor scuffs on the kicked toes, you can safely use standard red or neutral shoe polish. You must never dry the footwear in the immediate vicinity of an open fire or directly on a hot radiator – the natural leather could dry out, irreparably crack, and harden.
