Two-Tone Gothic Leather Poulaines with Side Lacing and Scalloped Cuff

Historical Context and Practical Application

Footwear with a noticeably elongated toe, known as poulaines or crakows, was an unmistakable symbol of luxury and status during the High and Late Gothic periods, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The general rule was: the longer the toe, the more important the wearer. This calf-high model with its decoratively scalloped cuff evokes the precise footwear of noble lords, wealthy merchants, or experienced mercenary commanders. The shortened version of the historical toe offers an excellent compromise between period aesthetics and practicality for today's leisure activities—it retains its magnificent look, but you won't trip over it while running or fighting.

Construction and Walking Safety

The boots are meticulously sewn from high-quality and supple full-grain cowhide leather. A very practical and aesthetic element is the functional side lacing with a leather string, allowing you to perfectly adjust the footwear to the shape and volume of your calf. To prevent the risk of dangerous falls, which are common with purely historical smooth leather soles on modern surfaces (such as wet grass, cobblestones, or asphalt), these boots are equipped with a modern solid rubber sole. This ensures a confident and safe stride in any situation.

Proper Care for Leather Footwear

When the boots arrive from our workshop, they are already treated with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. To ensure your boots last as long as possible in perfect condition, do not forget about regular maintenance. After every event, clean off coarse dirt with a damp cloth and let them air dry naturally at room temperature. Never dry them on a radiator or near an open flame, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack! Afterwards, lubricate the leather with a leather balm or oil. The balm softens and waterproofs the leather (bear in mind that the leather will darken slightly after application). If you need to cover up minor damages or scuffed toes, a standard tinted shoe polish will also serve you excellently.

Colour Options and Custom Tailoring

The height of the boots is fixed at approximately 33 cm (13 inches), measured including the sole, and unfortunately cannot be modified. However, you can create your own custom colour design. When ordering, please specify two colours:

  • Colour 1: Determines the colour of the bottom part of the boot (instep, heel, toe) and the top decorative scalloped cuff.
  • Colour 2: Determines the colour of the middle part of the boot (shin and calf area).

Please always write your exact colour requirements in the order notes to avoid any misunderstandings. We supply the boots in standard EU sizes, or we will gladly make them to measure for you. If you wear orthopaedic insoles and choose the custom-made option, it is absolutely essential to send these insoles to us in advance. Our shoemaker will incorporate them precisely into the boots so they fit you like a glove.
