High Gothic Leather Boots with Pointed Toes and Side Buckles

Historical Context and Practical Application

Footwear with a distinctly elongated and slightly upturned toe, known as poulaines or crakows, dominated High and Late Gothic fashion. It was a status symbol favoured by nobility and wealthy burghers across Europe. This high-boot model featuring a practical side closure and a folded upper cuff evokes the appearance of affluent travellers, mercenaries, or hunters from the 14th and 15th centuries. The shortened version of the historical toe represents an excellent compromise-it retains the authentic Gothic aesthetic while not restricting you in any way whilst walking, running, or fighting at today's historical events, stage combat, and LARPs.

Construction and Walking Safety

The boots are carefully sewn from strong yet supple cowhide leather, which over time will adapt perfectly to the shape of your calves and feet. The system of three straps with buckles on the outer side allows for easy donning and ideal tightening of the footwear. To prevent the risk of slipping, which is a common danger with purely historical smooth leather soles, these boots are equipped with a modern solid rubber sole. You will thus gain a confident and safe stride even on wet grass, cobblestones, or modern asphalt.

Proper Care for Leather Footwear

When the boots arrive from our workshop, they are already treated with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. To ensure your boots last as long as possible in perfect condition, do not forget about regular maintenance. After every use, clean off coarse dirt with a damp cloth and let them air dry naturally at room temperature. Never dry them on a radiator or near an open flame, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack. Afterwards, apply a layer of leather balm or oil. The balm softens and waterproofs the leather (bear in mind that the leather will darken slightly after application). If you need to cover up minor damages or scuffed toes, a standard tinted shoe polish will also serve you excellently.

Size Options and Custom Tailoring

We offer the boots in standard EU sizes. If you prefer footwear tailored exactly to your foot, we will gladly make them to measure. The total height of the boot, including the sole, is fixed at approximately 33 cm (13 inches) and unfortunately cannot be altered. Please note an important detail: if you wear orthopaedic insoles and choose the custom-made option, it is essential to send these insoles to us in advance. Our shoemaker will incorporate them precisely into the boots so they fit you like a glove.
