Historical Legacy and Runic Symbolism
Round shields (Old Norse rönd) formed the absolute foundation of Viking infantry tactics, especially in the formation of the famous shield wall (skjaldborg). The product is decorated around the perimeter with characters of the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet used by Germanic tribes. In the centre of the shield, there is a magical seal based on the tradition of Icelandic Galdrastafir, which were intended to provide the bearer with protection, guidance, and indomitable courage. Furthermore, the golden colour of the fittings evokes the use of bronze or brass, historically pointing to the shields of wealthier jarls and esteemed warriors.
Construction, Usage, and Safety Guidelines
The core of your defence is a shield with a diameter of 60 cm (approx. 23.6 inches), providing excellent torso coverage whilst allowing for good manoeuvrability. The vulnerable edge of the wood is reinforced with a sturdy metal rim, which prevents splintering when struck by an enemy weapon. Hand protection is provided by the prominent metal boss, referred to as the shield attachment. For a secure and firm grip, a handle is attached to the back. This product is absolutely ideal for LARP, cosplay, historical festivals, light scenic fencing, and last but not least, as a majestic decoration for your mead hall. Because this is not certified plate armour intended for heavy full-contact combat, we explicitly warn against its use in high-impact disciplines such as buhurt or Battle of the Nations. Heavy strikes with solid weapons could irreversibly damage the shield and cause you injury.
Material Care and Recommended Accessories
To ensure the shield serves you well for a long time and keeps looking great, avoid exposing it to moisture for extended periods. The wood could begin to warp and twist. We recommend cleaning the metal parts, namely the rim and the central boss, after every battlefield deployment and lightly coating them with gun oil, preventing the formation of unwanted rust. To complete the illusion of a Norse warrior, we highly recommend purchasing a quality one-handed Viking sword with a blunt blade for scenic fencing, or an authentic leather shoulder bag to go with this shield.
