Viking Horn Mug with Vegvisir and Dragons, 500-600 ml
Unique Design Inspired by the Sagas
This horn tankard from Lord Of Battles® is meticulously handcrafted from 100% ethically sourced, genuine ox horn, making each piece a complete original. Its surface is precisely polished to a high gloss, featuring a dark, almost black colour enlivened by natural marbled patterns near the bottom. The mug has an organic, slightly curved body, and the handle is elegantly carved from a single piece of horn. The main motif is a detailed engraving of the magical compass, Vegvisir—a legendary protector for travellers—flanked by two stylised Norse dragons. The base of the mug is made from a durable material to ensure stability on any surface.

History and Symbolism: A Magical Compass and Mythical Beasts
Drinking from horns has a thousand-year-old tradition across many cultures, from the Vikings to the Celts. Horns were a readily available material and ideal for making drinking vessels. They were used for both daily needs and for celebratory rituals and feasts.
A Historical Note: Vegvisir and Dragons
The Vegvisir symbol, known as the Viking compass, is an Icelandic magical stave (galdrastafur). Its purpose was to help the bearer find their way through rough weather. Although strongly associated with Vikings today, its first known appearance is in the 19th-century Huld Manuscript. Its use during the historical Viking Age (up to the 11th century) is more of a romantic notion. Dragons, however, such as the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr, are firmly rooted in Norse mythology, symbolizing power, chaos, and the cyclical nature of the world.
How to Care for Your Horn Mug
To ensure your mug brings you joy for as long as possible, give it the proper care. The interior is sealed with a food-safe resin layer.
What (Not) to Put in Your Mug:
- SUITABLE: Cold and lukewarm drinks. You can enjoy beer, mead, wine, cider, water, or soft drinks. The mug is safe for beverages with up to 20% alcohol content.
- UNSUITABLE: Hot drinks (coffee, tea), spirits over 20% ABV, dishwashers, and microwaves. High temperatures could permanently damage both the horn and the internal resin layer.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Washing: Immediately after use, hand wash the mug under running lukewarm water.
- Drying: Dry it carefully with a soft cloth. Do not leave it to soak.
- Treatment: To prolong its life, we recommend occasionally rubbing the outside of the horn with a little beeswax.
Please Note: Each piece is unique in its colour and shape. Over time, natural ageing of the material may occur. However, with proper care, you will significantly extend its lifespan.
