Renaissance Steel Rodela Shield with Brass Rivets and Twisted Edge
Origin and Historical Use of the Rodela Shield
The round shield, historically known as a rodela (or rodelo), was a highly popular defensive weapon throughout Renaissance Europe. From the early Middle Ages into the 16th century, it was favoured by duellists, knights, and specialised infantry. It played a particularly vital role in Spain and Italy, where soldiers known as rodeleros used this shield in combination with a short sword to break through enemy pike formations. Its specific shape made it perfectly suited for quick deflections, and in close quarters, the solid edge was often used for unexpected offensive strikes. Furthermore, brass accents frequently signalled the wealth and high social standing of the bearer.
Practical Use and Safety Guidelines
This product is hand-forged from durable 16-gauge mild steel (approx. 1.5 mm). It is fully functional and highly suitable for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) training, stage combat practice, theatrical performances, or demanding LARP events. However, we must strictly advise you that this is not protective armour designed for full-contact, heavy force combat such as buhurt, Battle of the Nations, and similar extreme disciplines. Enduring such extreme force could lead to shield deformation and potential injury. For your ultimate comfort and safety while fencing, we strongly recommend wearing a padded gambeson sleeve and a sturdy leather fencing glove under the shield.
Steel Shield Maintenance
To ensure this rodela serves you well for a long time and retains its mirror polish, proper care is essential. Mild steel is naturally prone to rust if exposed to moisture. After every training session or battle, thoroughly wipe the shield dry with a cloth to remove sweat and dirt. Subsequently, apply a thin layer of light weapon oil to the polished front to preserve the steel. The blackened back offers some protection but still requires storage in a dry environment. You should also periodically inspect the condition of the leather straps and the twisted rim, which can be carefully tapped back into shape if mildly dented.
To fully complete your look as a Spanish conquistador or city guardsman, we highly recommend pairing this elegant rodela with a functional Renaissance rapier and an authentic morion helmet.
