Durable Construction for Demanding Use
This chainmail shirt is carefully crafted in the traditional 4-in-1 pattern, the most common weave in the Middle Ages due to its effectiveness and flexibility. The mail is composed of alternating rows of rings: one row of round rings, each individually secured with a dome-head rivet, alternates with a row of solid, flat rings punched from a sheet. This "riveted/solid" method provides significantly greater tensile strength than mail made from simple butted rings. The entire hauberk is forged from 18 gauge (approx. 1.2 mm) mild steel and has a natural, lightly oiled finish to protect it from corrosion.
For maximum comfort and functionality, we recommend wearing the hauberk over a padded gambeson. A gambeson cushions blows and helps to distribute the armour's weight evenly. By adding a sturdy leather belt, you not only enhance the historical look but also transfer part of the weight to your hips, relieving your shoulders during extended wear.

A Note from History
For thousands of years, chainmail was the dominant form of body armour for a warrior. Its invention is attributed to the ancient Celts, from whom the Romans adopted and perfected it in their lorica hamata. It reached its zenith in medieval Europe, where it was the standard equipment for knights until the advent of full plate armour in the 14th and 15th centuries. The production of a single mail shirt could take hundreds of hours, making it an extremely valuable asset, often passed down from generation to generation.
Caring for Your Armour
To ensure your chainmail serves you for a long time and resists rust, please give it some basic care:
- After each use, dry the armour thoroughly and wipe it down with a soft cloth.
- Lightly oil the rings with machine or mineral oil to prevent rust.
- Store it in a dry place. For extended storage, keep it in a cloth bag (avoid sealed plastic) to allow airflow.
Size Chart
When choosing your size, measure your chest circumference over the gambeson you intend to wear underneath. For comfortable movement, we recommend adding an allowance of 10-15 cm (4-6 inches). If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.
