Medieval Sewing Needles, Solid Brass, Set of 6
The Key to an Authentic Stitch
When creating a historical costume or accessory, every detail matters. Using period-appropriate tools not only adds authenticity to your work but also enhances the joy of crafting.
- Durable Material: The needles are made from a single piece of solid brass, which, unlike iron, does not corrode and will not leave rust stains on fabric.
- Historical Design: The shape of the needles, including the flattened head and elongated eye, corresponds to archaeological finds from the medieval period across Europe.
- Practical Size: A length of nearly 6 cm and a diameter of 1.25 mm make these needles ideal for sewing garments, tents, leather accessories, and other sturdy items.
- Convenient Set: The package contains 6 needles, so you'll always have one on hand, even if one gets lost at the campsite.
A Treasured Possession in History
Since prehistoric times, sewing needles have been among the most basic and valuable tools. In the Middle Ages, metal needles—whether iron, bronze, or brass—were an important part of personal property. People carefully guarded them in special cases (known as etuis or needle cases) made of wood, bone, or metal. Losing a needle, especially while travelling or on a military campaign, was a significant inconvenience. Brass needles were particularly popular for their resistance to corrosion, a huge advantage in an age without stainless steel.

How to Care for Your Needles
Brass is a very durable material. Over time, it may develop a natural patina, which only enhances the historical appearance of the needles. If you prefer a shiny surface, you can easily polish them with a soft cloth using any brass cleaner. The most important thing is to store the needles safely to prevent them from getting lost. We recommend sticking them into a piece of fabric or felt and keeping them in a sewing box or needle case.
Please Note: Although the needles are robust, do not use excessive force when piercing very hard materials (e.g., thick leather). In such cases, it is better to pre-punch a hole with an awl.
