European 14th Century Arming Sword – Official Royal Armouries Replica

This one-handed sword immediately impresses with its distinctive features, typical of the early period of the Hundred Years' War. The pommel looks conventional when viewed head-on, but turn the sword sideways, and an unusual, somewhat conical and faceted shape reveals itself, giving it a unique appearance. The hilt is designed to sit very comfortably in the hand and is wrapped in black leather for a secure grip. The subtly shaped crossguard, 18cm wide, curves gracefully towards the blade, tapering and then swelling at the terminals.

The broad, leaf-like straight blade has a flattened-diamond cross-section and is double-edged. A narrow fuller running down the centre of the blade reduces its mass without compromising strength. The blade's width swells slightly where it meets the hilt (the ricasso), and its gracefully curved edges finish in an acute thrusting tip. Although the sword is quite light for its size (1220g), it has a lot of blade presence and power in the hand, making it very well suited for impressive cuts and thrusts.

Markings are visible on the blade, including "ROYAL ARMOURIES IX.2141," confirming its licensed origin.

A Glimpse into History: The Arming Sword in the 14th Century

One-handed swords, often referred to as "arming swords," were common sidearms for knights and other men-at-arms in the 14th century. They were carried either alone or in combination with a shield or a smaller buckler. Their use with small bucklers is famously depicted in the Royal Armouries Ms. I.33 fencing treatise. These swords are also seen equipping fully armoured knights in numerous contemporary manuscripts and monuments. They were versatile weapons, effective for both cutting and thrusting, and symbolised knightly status.

This particular type of sword could have been carried at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), one of the most significant conflicts of the European Middle Ages. The discovery of the original in a peat bog, along with another now in Rome, attests to its widespread use and typicality for the period.

Interesting Fact From History

The original sword, housed in the Royal Armouries as No. IX.2141, is exceptional for its state of preservation. The peat bog where it was found provided an anaerobic environment, which significantly slowed down corrosion processes. This allowed not only its shape but also details that would otherwise have been lost to survive. Comparable swords have been found across much of Europe, indicating common armoury styles and technologies.

Replica Quality and Craftsmanship

This replica is crafted with a blade that is even better than the original in terms of material; the blade is hand-forged by an experienced, skilled blacksmith in exactly the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and distally tapered (5.5mm thick at guard, 3.1mm at tip) for proper weight distribution, excellent balance, and liveliness in hand. The overall length of the sword is 101cm, with the blade measuring 85cm and having a width of 63mm at the ricasso.

The sword comes with a high-quality scabbard, made to replicate one of the period. It has a wooden body covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with an ornate brass chape that features cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends slightly upwards. Please note: Unlike some photos might suggest, the sheath does not actually cover part of the handle. Its edge ends just below the guard and is straight.

You will also receive a certificate of authenticity on heavy stock paper.

Caring for Your Sword

To maintain your sword's beauty and functionality for years to come, a little care is required:

  • Blade: Regularly wipe it with a dry cloth. After each handling, especially if it has come into contact with moisture or sweat, dry it thoroughly and apply a light coat of gun oil or mineral oil (e.g., WD-40, Break-Free CLP) to prevent rust.
  • Hilt and Scabbard: Treat leather parts of the hilt and scabbard with a leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking. Protect the wooden core of the scabbard from prolonged exposure to moisture.
  • Storage: Store the sword in a dry place. For long-term storage, it is advisable to keep it out of the scabbard, as leather and wood can retain moisture.

Safe Handling Guidelines

Remember that even a semi-sharp replica sword is still a weapon and requires responsible handling:

  • Always handle the sword with care, understanding that even an unsharpened edge or point can cause injury.
  • Never point the sword at yourself or others unless it is part of controlled and safe training under supervision.
  • Ensure you have ample free space around you when practicing techniques or handling the sword in any way.
  • Keep the sword out of reach of children.
  • At public events (e.g., re-enactments), be mindful of the safety of bystanders and adhere to the rules set by the event organizers.
