Warrior Wooden Round Shield with Steel Plating, 22 inch

Construction and Craftsmanship

The core of the shield is a solid wooden board with a diameter of 22 inches (56 cm). The front face is painted dark, creating a striking contrast with the polished steel elements. The shield is dominated by a massive steel boss (umbo) made of 16 gauge (1.6 mm) steel, which is ideal for deflecting blows and aggressive thrusting. The boss sits on a decorative star-shaped steel plate. The rim of the shield is protected by segmented steel plating, reinforcing the entire structure and protecting the wood from splintering.

Unlike classic Viking shields with a center grip, this model is equipped with a strapping system for the forearm. On the back, you will find a padded leather cuff for your arm and a sturdy handle (a combination of steel and wood) for your hand. This solution ensures a firm and stable fit on the arm, which you will appreciate especially during dynamic movement in terrain, as the shield will not "float" in your hand.

Historical Insight: From Function to Fantasy

While classic Viking shields were designed to be held in one hand by a grip hidden behind the boss (allowing for great reach and manipulation), the forearm strap system (as seen on this model) historically appeared more on cavalry shields, heater shields, or later Renaissance target shields known as rotella. This shield combines the visual ferocity of Nordic round shields with the ergonomics of later eras. This makes it ideal for modern LARP and re-enactment, where greater control over the shield is often required during contact combat.

Shield Care

To ensure your shield lasts as long as possible and keeps looking new, give it a little care:

  • Steel: Metal parts are prone to rust. After every use (especially in damp conditions), wipe them dry and oil them with a preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or specialized armour oil).
  • Wood: You can occasionally treat the wooden parts with linseed oil or wax to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking.
  • Leather: Keep the leather straps supple using a leather balm with beeswax.
  • Storage: Never leave the shield in a damp environment for long periods (e.g., in the grass overnight), as the wood could warp or the fittings could rust.

If you plan to use the shield for training with steel weapons, please bear in mind that the 18 gauge steel fittings may dent under heavy blows (which, however, will give it a battle patina). For safe transport, we recommend purchasing a suitable shield bag or a back strap.
