Antique Patinated Brass Phalera with Ancient Gorgon Medusa Motif

Historical Context and Ancient Symbolism

In the myths of old, the Gorgon Medusa was both a feared and revered being, whose gaze could turn mortals to stone. Her visage, known as the gorgoneion, became one of the most widespread protective (apotropaic) symbols of the ancient world. It commonly adorned the shields of Greek hoplites, the armour of heroes, and temple gates to ward off evil and misfortune. In the Roman army, similar sculpted metal discs were called phalerae. These metal rounds, often bearing the likenesses of deities or emperors, were awarded as military decorations for valour. Soldiers wore them proudly attached to leather chest harnesses during ceremonial parades, and decorated cohorts used them to adorn their military standards.

How to Install and Use

This replica is equipped on the back with four integrated threaded posts into which the provided machine screws are fastened. For installation, four corresponding holes must be punched into the backing material. Due to the heavy weight of the casting, which exceeds 737 grams (1.62 lbs), it is essential to mount the phalera only on very strong and load-bearing materials. Thick cowhide leather with a thickness of at least 3 to 4 millimetres (approx. 0.12 - 0.16 inches) or a wooden base (if using the product as interior decor or on a shield) is ideal. Installation on thin fabrics or standard clothing is completely unsuitable, as the weight would tear the textile.

Safety Warnings and Product Care

Since this is a massive metal object, avoid falling on your chest when wearing it on armour to prevent injury from the protruding parts of the relief (nose, tongue). Protect the product from strong mechanical impacts; the casting could crack upon being struck by a weapon. This is not a functional piece of armour for full-contact fencing (HMB, buhurt), but a decorative accessory. The antique patina will naturally deepen over time. To maintain this unique appearance, we recommend not cleaning the product with harsh chemicals or abrasive metal polishes. An occasional wipe with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth is perfectly sufficient.

Recommended Accessories

High-quality leather strapping, from which you can assemble a complete Roman chest harness for decorations, pairs perfectly with this product. To complete your ancient kit, we also recommend acquiring a replica of a Roman gladius sword or a red legionary tunic.
