Massive Antique Brass Plaque for Roman or Barbarian Belts
Historical Inspiration and Art Style
Although this is an accessory primarily intended for fantasy and LARP, its design draws strong inspiration from the era of Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. In ancient Rome, legionaries wore wide belts called cingulum militare, which were heavily decorated with metal plates (known as baltea). These plates served not only to stiffen the belt, from which the heavy gladius sword and pugio dagger hung, but primarily as a symbol of the soldier's status and wealth. The hammered surface and prominent central boss (umbo) on this plaque also point to the rougher, ritualistic, and functional aesthetics of barbarian tribes, who often adapted Roman equipment to suit their own image.
Instructions for Use and Installation
This decorative element is designed for both experienced and novice costume makers. The plaque is primarily designed to be applied to a very wide leather strap. Proper attachment is standardly done using small rivets or saddler's screws. It is necessary to carefully measure and punch holes in the leather belt that align with the fastening system on the back of the fitting. We recommend using leather with a thickness of at least 3 to 4 millimetres (approx. 1/8 to 5/32 in) so that the belt can support the weight of the massive plaque without deforming.

Brass Care and Safety Warnings
To ensure the plaque retains its authentic antique appearance, it does not require complex maintenance. The patina on the surface is created intentionally. To clean off dust and minor dirt, use only a dry or slightly dampened soft cloth. Strictly avoid aggressive chemical cleaners or abrasive metal pastes, which would destroy the artificial patina and give the fitting an unnaturally shiny appearance.
From a safety perspective, remember that the product serves exclusively as a decorative part of clothing. The plaque is not designed as protective armour. Avoid using it in full-contact combat (e.g., buhurt), where a strong strike from a weapon could deform the plaque and subsequently cause injury from any resulting sharp edges. For standard wear at festivals and in stage combat, its use is completely safe.
To create a complete belt, we highly recommend purchasing a high-quality leather blank in the appropriate width and a set of brass rivets from our leathercraft supplies range to accompany this plaque.
