Historical Inspiration and Art Style

In ancient Rome, legionaries wore wide belts called cingulum militare, which were heavily decorated with metal plates (known as baltea). These plates served not only to stiffen the belt, from which the heavy gladius sword and pugio dagger hung, but primarily as a symbol of the soldier's status and wealth. The hammered surface and prominent central boss (umbo) on this plaque also point to the rougher, ritualistic, and functional aesthetics of barbarian tribes, who often adapted Roman equipment to suit their own image.

Instructions for Use and Installation

This decorative element is designed for both experienced and novice costume makers. The plaque is primarily designed to be applied to a very wide leather strap. Proper attachment is standardly done using small rivets or saddler's screws. It is necessary to carefully measure and punch holes in the leather belt that align with the fastening system on the back of the fitting. We recommend using leather with a thickness of at least 3 to 4 millimetres (approx. 1/8 to 5/32 in) so that the belt can support the weight of the massive plaque without deforming.
