Medieval Crusader Knight Sword Lübeck Oakeshott Type XII Scabbard

Historical Context and Oakeshott Typology

When discussing swords of the High Middle Ages, weapons classified under the Oakeshott Type XII typology frequently come to the minds of historians and enthusiasts alike. These swords are characterized by a broad, flat blade that tapers evenly towards the point, featuring a pronounced fuller running approximately two-thirds of the blade's length. The original Lübeck sword reveals the incredible craftsmanship of medieval swordsmiths. Although the historical piece was heavily corroded when unearthed, its reconstruction presents a weapon that commanded immense respect on the battlefields of the 13th century.

Construction and Craftsmanship

The blade of this replica is forged from EN45 spring steel. It features a full tang that is securely peened at the pommel block. The crossguard is crafted from solid steel, providing a classic and reliable hand guard. The grip has a sturdy wooden core, meticulously wrapped in dark red-brown leather that provides a comfortable hold. The crowning glory of the hilt is the massive disc pommel, cast from bronze and topped with a steel peen block. The sword is delivered with a beautiful wooden scabbard, tightly bound in genuine leather that perfectly matches the reddish-brown tone of the grip.

Safety Warnings and Intended Use

Although this sword is crafted with a keen eye for historical detail, for safety reasons, it is strictly designed as a decorative item unsuitable for practical use. While the edges are unsharpened (approximately 1 mm / 0.04 inches thick), the materials and construction are not engineered to withstand the rigorous impacts of contact combat. We strongly advise against using this sword for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), buhurt tournaments, or any form of stage combat. Striking it against other blades or armour can result in severe damage to the weapon and pose a serious risk of injury to you or others. This sword serves perfectly as a high-end prop for cosplay, LARP (where metal props are permitted), theatrical productions, or as a striking display piece in your home.

Care and Maintenance Instructions

The EN45 high-carbon steel used for the blade is not rust-resistant. To ensure your sword remains in pristine condition and to prevent unwanted corrosion, we highly recommend regular maintenance. After handling the blade with bare hands or returning from a humid environment, apply a light coat of oil to all steel components. A universal gun oil, such as Ballistol, is excellent for this purpose. To prevent the leather on the grip and scabbard from drying out or cracking, occasionally treat it with a quality beeswax-based leather conditioner.

A well-crafted medieval leather sword belt with a frog is a highly recommended accessory, allowing you to carry the scabbard comfortably and authentically at your hip.
