Plate Arms (Full Arm Armor), 15th Century Milanese Style

Detailed Description and Construction

This complete set of plate arms is crafted from 1.6 mm (16-gauge) steel. Each arm is composed of three main, perfectly articulated parts:

  • Rerebrace (Upper Cannon): The upper section, covering the bicep and tricep.
  • Couter (Elbow Cop): The central, anatomically shaped piece protecting the elbow joint, complete with a large, heart-shaped wing that provides excellent protection to the inside of the elbow from cuts and thrusts.
  • Vambrace (Lower Cannon): The lower, two-part section that fully encloses and protects the forearm.

The individual components are connected by sturdy rivets and internal leather straps, ensuring fluid and safe movement. The interior of the armour is blackened for corrosion resistance.

Attachment and Fit

The arms are attached to the rest of your armour using the leather tabs at the top, through which "arming points" (laces) are threaded and tied to a gambeson or arming doublet. They are then secured to the arm itself with three robust leather straps with steel buckles, allowing for a perfect fit and firm attachment.

Historical Context: The Glory of Milanese Armourers

In the 15th century, Milan became the undisputed centre of armour production in Europe. Armour "in the Milanese style" was characterized by large, smooth, and rounded plates that effectively deflected blows. It was renowned for its robustness and excellent mobility. This style was so sought-after that nobility from all over Europe, from England to Hungary, commissioned it.

Did You Know?

The best Milanese armourers, such as the Missaglia family, were so famous and their workshops so productive that they could equip entire armies. Their name was a guarantee of the highest quality, and their products were considered the absolute pinnacle, much like how we perceive luxury sports car brands today.

Caring for Your New Armour

To maintain the function and appearance of your plate armour, we recommend:

  • Steel Parts: Keep them dry. After each use, wipe them down and lightly conserve them with oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) to prevent rust.
  • Leather Straps: Treat them with a leather care product from time to time to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
