A Fun Fact from History
Did you know that Roman legionaries used the umbo on their shield (scutum) for more than just passive defense? It was also an effective weapon. In close-quarters combat, legionaries would punch with the boss (in Latin, umbone pulsatim) to unbalance an opponent or injure their face, creating an opening for an immediate attack with their gladius sword. The boss was thus a key element in both defense and offense.
