Traditional Chinese Carbon Steel Tiger Fork with Ash Wood Shaft

History and Origins of the Tiger Fork

This weapon, known in Chinese as Hu Cha, has its roots in purely practical use. It was originally developed by Chinese hunters as a massive and uncompromising tool for hunting, trapping, and defending against large felines, especially tigers. The curved side prongs served to securely pin the animal's neck to the ground, while the central spike allowed for a lethal thrust. Over the centuries, martial arts masters recognised the potential of this tool and modified it into a formidable military weapon. Experienced warriors could use it to catch, parry, and twist enemy blades, ultimately disarming the opponent completely or throwing them to the ground.

Practical Use and Safety Warnings

Today, this type of polearm is highly valued primarily for practising traditional forms (taolu) in Chinese martial arts. The weapon is fully functional in terms of its construction, but extreme caution must be exercised. For safety reasons, this is a product that is completely unsuitable for contact fencing, man-to-man combat, or LARP battles. The solid carbon steel points can cause serious or even fatal injuries. Therefore, use it exclusively for solo form practice (without a partner) or as an exceptional decorative element in your armoury. You should also avoid striking the weapon against hard surfaces or materials, as this could damage the geometry of the prongs and compromise the integrity of the wooden shaft.

Care and Maintenance of the Weapon

To ensure that the weapon serves you well for a long time and retains its original appearance, it requires regular care. The fork head is made of carbon steel, which is susceptible to atmospheric corrosion. After each training session, it is absolutely essential to clean the metal parts of moisture and sweat and treat them with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil. We recommend occasionally treating the ash wood shaft with linseed oil or beeswax to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking.

Recommended Accessories

For safe transport and optimal maintenance, we recommend purchasing a high-quality gun oil spray and a practical carrying case for long polearms.
