Historically, bowstrings were most often twisted from natural materials, predominantly flax, hemp, or even braided animal sinews and intestines. Such strings were extremely sensitive to humidity. If it started to rain during a medieval battle, the hemp strings would soak up water, sag, and render the crossbows practically useless. Today, thanks to synthetic fibres, this problem is completely eliminated, and the string retains its top-tier properties in any weather.

Installation and Proper Use

Given that modern high-performance crossbows possess an enormous draw weight, a special bow press or a specific stringing cable is usually required to safely change the string. If you lack experience with string replacement or do not have the appropriate equipment, it is best to entrust the installation to a professional archery technician. Following a successful installation, ensure that the string is seated correctly in the cam grooves and that the centre serving aligns perfectly with the flight groove.

Safety Principles and Warnings

Never dry fire your crossbow! Firing without an arrow loaded causes all the stored energy of the limbs to be transferred directly into the string and the weapon's structure itself. This can result in the string snapping instantly, the cams being destroyed, the limbs fracturing, and, above all, serious injury to yourself. Visually inspect the string and its servings before every shooting session. If you notice broken fibres, cease using the weapon immediately and replace the string.

String Maintenance Guide

To ensure your string serves you for as long as possible and retains its elasticity, it requires regular care. After every few dozen shots, or when you notice the surface fibres appearing dry, apply a specialized bowstring wax. Gently rub the wax into the synthetic fibres using your fingers (however, avoid waxing the centre serving where the arrow is nocked, to prevent gumming up the trigger mechanism). Regular lubrication significantly reduces friction and extends the lifespan of the entire string.
