German Gothic Elbow Cops (Couters), c. 1480
Detailed Product Description
This pair of elbow cops (or couters) is precision-crafted from 1.2 mm (18-gauge) carbon steel. Each piece is designed with an emphasis on functionality and authentic appearance, defined by the following features:
- Large Winged Fan: A large, pointed, and fan-shaped plate protects the vulnerable inner side of the elbow joint.
- Gothic Fluting: Several parallel grooves (flutes) not only decorate the surface but, more importantly, increase the structural rigidity of the plate without adding weight.
- Reinforcing Ridge: A central, sharp ridge runs along the couter, further enhancing its resistance to impact.
- Rolled Edges: All edges are carefully rolled and flared, which increases the safety and durability of the armour.
- Dual Fastening System: The couters are secured to the arm with adjustable straps of genuine leather and period-appropriate buckles. For a perfect fit over a gambeson or arming doublet, four holes are provided for leather laces (included).
- Anti-Rust Coating: The interior is coated with black paint to protect the steel from corrosion.
Please Note: The cuirass, gambeson, and other accessories shown in one of the images are for demonstration purposes only and are not included. The price is for the pair of elbow cops with their leather straps and laces.

History and Fun Facts
The Art of the German Armourers
German Gothic armour from the late 15th century is considered both a technological and artistic peak of European armour-making. Unlike the smooth, rounded forms of Italian (Milanese) armour, the German style was characterized by slender lines, sharp edges, and above all, complex fluting. This fluting not only looked fantastic and echoed the contemporary fashion of pleated fabrics but also had a practical function—it dramatically increased the strength of thinner, lighter steel plate.
Fun Fact: The Armour Capitals
Did you know that certain medieval cities became famous throughout Europe for their armour production? For German Gothic armour, the most renowned centres were the cities of Augsburg and Nuremberg. Armour from the masters of these cities was in such high demand that it was commissioned by kings and the highest nobility from all corners of the continent.
Product Care
To keep your elbow cops in pristine condition for years to come, follow these simple guidelines:
- Keep It Dry: After each use, especially in damp weather, wipe the steel thoroughly with a dry cloth.
- Rust Prevention: Regularly treat the outer surface with a thin layer of protective oil (e.g., WD-40, mineral oil). The interior is already protected by paint.
- Storage: Store them in a dry place. For long-term storage, wrapping them in an oiled cloth is ideal.
