Blackened Chainmail Haubergeon, 9mm Riveted and Solid Steel Rings

Detailed Product Description

This **mail armour** has the classic tunic cut of a **Haubergeon**, meaning it reaches to about mid-thigh and has sleeves that extend approximately three-quarters of the way down the arm (past the elbow). This design provides you with excellent protection for the torso and most of the arms without significantly restricting your mobility. The entire shirt features a **blackened finish**, which not only gives it a period-appropriate look but also enhances its resistance to corrosion. The mail is carefully crafted in the "4-in-1" pattern, and its specific feature is the combined construction known as RRRA (Round Ring Riveted Alternating):

  • Round Rings: With an internal diameter of approx. 9 mm, made from 1.2 mm (18 gauge) wire, they are securely fastened with round rivets.
  • Flat Solid Rings: Also with a diameter of approx. 9 mm, they are punched from sheet metal (solid, with no join).

This method, where rows of riveted and solid rings alternate, ensures the entire mail is exceptionally strong and resistant to tearing or piercing.

Your Armour for History and Fantasy

This **blackened chainmail shirt** is the ideal choice for a wide range of activities:

  • Historical Reenactment: Perfect for portraying a Viking, a Norman warrior, or other medieval fighters where authenticity and durability are key.
  • LARP and Cosplay: Reliable and visually impressive protection for your character in more demanding battles and adventures.
  • Costumes and Collecting: An impressive component of a historical or fantasy costume, or a valuable addition to a collection.

Please Note: While this armour is very durable, it is not a certified piece of protective equipment suitable for full-contact combat sports like buhurt (HMB), Battle of the Nations, etc.

A Glimpse into History

The Haubergeon, as a shorter form of the chainmail hauberk, was common throughout the medieval period. The construction method of alternating riveted and solid rings was one of the strongest and most effective available. The solid rings provided a strong foundation, while the riveted ones offered flexibility and connection. The blackening of steel, often achieved through controlled oxidation in oil, not only protected the armour from rust but could also serve as camouflage or as a mark of a specific group or rank.

Caring for Your Chainmail Shirt

Although the blackened finish provides some protection against rust, this is still steel armour that requires care:

  • After Each Use: Always wipe the shirt thoroughly with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Storage: Keep it in a dry, well-ventilated place. Prolonged exposure to humidity can lead to rust.
  • Preservation: For long-term storage, it is advisable to lightly coat it with a thin layer of oil (e.g., WD-40 or mineral oil).
  • What to Avoid: Steer clear of harsh, abrasive cleaning methods that could permanently damage the finish. Be aware that with normal use, the blackened layer may wear off in exposed areas over time; this is normal and adds to the armour's authentic look.
