A Glimpse into History

Round shields were the primary defensive tool for the Vikings. This type of shield, with its handle centered behind the metal boss, offered a significant strategic advantage. It not only effectively covered the warrior's hand and a large part of the torso but was also perfectly balanced and highly maneuverable. A warrior could actively parry blows and even attack by punching with the shield boss. Unlike shields strapped to the forearm, this center-grip design prevented a warrior's arm from being pinned to the shield by an enemy spear, which would have taken them out of the fight. Although the entire weight of the shield was borne by a single wrist, this was not a major obstacle for a well-trained warrior.

An Interesting Fact: The Legendary Shield Wall

The Vikings were famous for their tactic known as the skjaldborg, or "Shield Wall." Warriors in the front line would lock their shields together, creating an almost impenetrable barrier against enemy arrows and attacks. The success of this formation depended entirely on the quality and durability of their shields—just like the one you can own.

How to Care for Your Shield

To ensure your shield maintains its original beauty and to extend its lifespan, follow these simple principles:

• Wood Protection: Keep the shield dry. If it gets wet, allow it to dry slowly, away from direct heat sources like radiators or direct sunlight, to prevent the wood from warping or cracking. Occasionally, you can treat the wooden parts with linseed oil or another natural wood oil.
• Metal Care: After each use, especially in a humid environment, wipe the metal parts (rim and boss) dry. To prevent rust, it's advisable to apply a light coat of conservation oil.
• Storage: Do not store the shield in damp areas like basements. Avoid prolonged exposure to the elements.
