Detailed Appearance and Craftsmanship
The brooch is shaped like a lozenge, with its points terminating in stylised trefoils that resemble flowers. It is these "flowers" that are decorated with coloured enamel, and you can choose from royal blue, fiery red, or mysterious green variants. The entire brooch, including the movable pin, is made of high-quality brass with a polished finish, giving it an authentic golden lustre. Each piece is unique due to being hand-cast.
Versatile Use for Your Garb
This medieval ring brooch is not only for decoration but is above all functional. It is perfectly suited for fastening the neckline of a lady's dress (kirtle) or a man's tunic. You can also use it to secure a cloak or mantle, or as a decorative element on a veil or hood. With an internal width of approximately 24 mm, it is ideal for pinning medium-weight woollen and linen fabrics.
A Story Set in Stone: The Bamberg Original
The model for this brooch dates to the High Gothic period, specifically to the years 1230-1240. The original is carved onto one of the most famous sculptures of German Gothic art – the figure of Synagoga, which is part of the portal of Bamberg Cathedral. These statues, Synagoga and Ecclesia (the Church), represented an allegorical depiction of the Old and New Testaments. Synagoga is shown blindfolded, symbolising that she has not yet seen the true light of faith. It is this very brooch that holds her cloak. Thus, you are not just wearing a piece of jewellery, but the legacy of one of the greatest works of medieval sculpture.
Simple and Secure Fastening
Using this annular brooch (or fibula) is easy and safe for your fabric:
- Pierce the pin through the fabric where you want to fasten the garment.
- Bring the tip of the pin back up through the fabric and pass it through the centre of the brooch.
- Rotate the brooch by 90 degrees so the pin rests against the frame. The tension of the fabric will hold the pin securely in place.
